Two of hip-hop's biggest names have a new album 'Watch the Throne,' and a tour, which is slated to come to Atlantic City in November. And speaking of collaborations ... Britney and Gaga!
ATLANTIC CITY — There must be something in the water in Atlantic City.
Or maybe it's just being inside historic Boardwalk Hall (formerly Convention Hall).
Or it could be neither of the above.
However, rumor has it that Britney Spears, whose Femme Fatale Tour with Nicki Minaj stopped at Boardwalk Hall on Saturday, Aug. 6, may be closer to working with Lady Gaga on a duet song, after discussing the possibility while both were in Atlantic City, at Boardwalk Hall, for Spears' show.
Before we get into that, however, there's some breaking news related to Boardwalk Hall.
Jay-Z and Kanye West, two of the biggest names in hip-hop and modern music in general, are slated to bring their joint Throne tour to the large venue on the Atlantic City Boardwalk on Saturday, Nov. 19, the weekend before Thanksgiving.
Jay-Z has performed in Atlantic City before, and so has his wife, Beyoncé (whose all-girl band's saxophonist, Tia Fuller, performed at Kennedy Plaza on the Boardwalk as part of the Chicken Bone Beach Jazz on the Beach summer concert series last Thursday, Aug. 11; see photos here).
In fact, Jay and Beyoncé appeared together at the July 2005 groundbreaking of Jay-Z's Atlantic City 40/40 Club (he has others all over, but A.C. was the second location, after the original New York City spot, for his nightclub slash ultra sports lounge), and at the Oct. 25, 2005 grand opening bash, AND at the star-studded one-year anniversary party (among the times that the pair has been seen together in A.C. publicly, at least).
However, Jay-Z and his other partner, Kanye West — the two team up on the newly released Watch the Throne album — will make their debut appearance together in Atlantic City at Boardwalk Hall.
The pair has teamed up for a North American tour to promote their new album.
The Throne tour is slated to kick off Oct. 29 in Atlanta and continue through Dec. 18, with the last date scheduled as of press time in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Tickets for the general public go on sale Friday, Aug. 19, at 10am at ticketmaster.com or livenation.com. The Borgata is presenting the concert and Live Nation is producing. Tickets can also be purchased at the Borgata Box Office.
Kanye West will return to Atlantic City this winter.
Hip-hop isn’t what it was during the late 1980s when there were a number of incendiary acts, none larger than Public Enemy, which rapped about what mattered with a palpable intensity. That was a golden era. A minority of contemporary hip-hop artists are rapping about what matters. You can put Jay-Z and Kanye West onto that list. The iconic recording artists aren’t like their peers, many of which are content to wax about conspicuous consumption.
This is not the sort of news that Atlantic City, which is mired in a four-year gaming revenue slump, needed to hear. And if you think one entertainment venue located 120 miles from the Boardwalk isn’t such a big deal, think again.

Last weekend was one of the busiest weekends of the year so far in Atlantic City. Especially if you're a fan of urban music, as two of the genre's top performers, Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z, were live i...
It’s not difficult to see why the pop-music world and beyond is gaga over Lady Gaga. In just over a year the sensual diva has gone from virtual unknown to a superstar, who has sold more than eight million copies of her initial albums, 2008’s 'The Fame' and 2009’s 'The Fame Monster.'
IT TOOK HIM THREE YEARS, BUT JAY-Z finally took New Jersey Senator Richard Codey's advice to heart. During a groundbreaking press event back in July 2005 for the hip-hop powerhouse's 40/40 Club in At...

Several specials related to Lady Gaga's Feb. 19 appearance are going on around town, including one at Trump Plaza (adjoining Boardwalk Hall), where their “Gaga for Gaga” signature drink specials include such concoctions as the “Little Monster’s Mix” (gin, Apple Pucker and pineapple juice), the “Paparazzi Potion” (Absolut vodka, Chambord, club soda and a lemon twist) and “A Shot of Bad Romance” (Cointreau, grape vodka and Sprite), “Telephone Treat.”
On assignment at the event for Atlantic City Weekly, freelance photographer Nick Valinote was there and caught this wonderful early shot of one of the biggest names in music today....
