Free concerts on the Atlantic City Boardwalk have become quite a staple over the last few years. The Atlantic City Free Public Library sponsored another series of free concerts in its international night series on Wednesdays at Kennedy Plaza and Bally’s has turned the plaza in front of the Dennis Hotel into a major spot for free performances with Blue Oyster Cult playing Saturday. But the concert series that started it all, The Chicken Bone Beach concert series, offers up one final concert for the summer Thursday (Aug. 27) when Kennedy Plaza gets taken over by the N.Y.P.D. Well, 18 of then anyway, as New York’s Finest Jazz Ensemble makes an appearance. The band is comprised of 18 New York cops, all members of the city’ full police band. Though the band was first formed in 1901 and is usually at the front of most New York City parades, the band has been touring internationally for the last several years. That’s led to the offshoot of ensembles with a steel drum and percussion ensemble joining the jazz ensemble. But it was the success of the Chicken Bone Beach series that lured the jazz ensemble to Atlantic City. The police band contacted the concert organizers and arranged to play an extra show for the season. “We’re just thrilled to have them,” says Henrietta Shelton, organizer of the series. “It was just such a nice surprise that they wanted to play for us and it gives us a chance to put on one more concert for the year.” And for fans of tunes on the boards, especially free tunes, it’s just one more chance to get your jazz on before Labor Day.
The line-up for the 11th annual Jazz on the Beach concert series in Atlantic City has been announced and the schedule is chock full of amazing talent.
