After the city’s July 4th
weekend celebration, including a fireworks display at the 9th St. Beach on Monday, the city settles into its summer routine.

And by routine, we’re not just talking about beachgoers catching some rays or having some pork roll on the Boardwalk.

The summer routine in Ocean City includes a host of weekly events that set the pace for the season.

For example, from July 4 on, you can expect Asbury Avenue, the city’s main shopping district, to feature clowns, face painters and balloons as part of Funtastic Tuesdays (starting at 1pm). Or, from the 4th on, you’ll find beach guides to take you on walks through the city’s landscape at 9am and 6:30pm on both ends of the island. (Corson’s Inlet Park or the O.C./Longport Bridge parking lot). The walks are $1 for adults, 50 cents for kids.

And it hardly ends there. From a farmer’s market at the Tabernacle grounds to Mummers night on the Boardwalk every Tuesday, the city hosts a special events nearly every weekday.

Here’s a rundown of some of the other weekly events that get underway after the Fourth. Most run until Labor Day.

• Stockton Goes to The Beach concert series at Music Pier. The concerts are held every Monday at 8pm through Aug. 22. The series begins July 11 with The Classics IV. Tickets are $25.

• Stockton Children’s Summer Playhouse. The companion to the Stockton Goes to the Beach series, these children’s programs are held Wednesday’s at 10:30am to July 27. The opening performance is “Pirate School” on July 6, a special one-man show to introduce kids to the legends and lore of pirates. Tickets are $8.

• Family Film and Fun Night. Held at the Cornerstone Auditorium at Stainton’s Square Tuesdays at 7:15pm. The $4.50 per person ($18 per family max) includes a family film, pizza, popcorn and drink.

• O.C. Farmers Market at the Tabernacle Grounds, 6th & Asbury Ave. every Wednesday 8am–1pm.

• Family Nights. Every Thursday night on the Boardwalk. Features live entertainment, clowns, balloons and general fun. Free. 7:30-9:30pm.

• Market Days. 10am–1pm - Asbury Avenue. Entertainment, face painters, balloon sculptors.

• Mummers Night. Strutting 7–9pm on the Boardwalk, 6th–14th sts. Every Tuesday.

• Evenings along Asbury Avenue. Wednesdays, 5-8pm. Music, art, shopping, and dining.

When it comes to southern New Jersey in the summer, the most plentiful freebie out there is music. Hey, even the sand and the surf aren’t free in most beach towns. But thanks to the Atlantic City Boardwalk, the Somers Point bay beaches and other spots around the region, there’s never a shortage of free concerts to enjoy.
