The long-awaited DVD set featuring the complete first season of HBO's Boardwalk Empire will be released in January 2012.
According to Terry Winter, creator of the hit drama series based in 1920s Atlantic City, the delay in releasing the complete season set until after the holiday season is due to the fact that some of the nearly 200 countries where the series is being shown will not have not seen the entire first season before the end of 2011.
Meanwhile, season two is more than half-way through its run on HBO, and has been garnering much acclaim, with many fans saying the current season is even better than the first.
Winter tells Atlantic City Weekly that he and his fellow writers have already held a month of meetings regarding the third season, which Winter hopes will debut in the fall of 2012.
The Boardwalk Empire: Complete First Season (2010) DVD collection is a 5-disc set that features all of season one's episodes, including the Martin Scorsese directed pilot, in addition to a variety of special features such as the documentaries that aired prior to the pilot on HBO in September 2010, which feature many noteworthy Atlantic City authors and historians (such as acweekly.com's own columnist Turiya S. A. Raheem). They include the "Making of Boardwalk Empire," "Atlantic City: The Original Sin City," a "Speakeasy Tour," six audio commentaries with cast and crew, "Creating The Boardwalk," and a character dossier/evolving character guide.
You can pre-order the set online.
The DVD and Blue-ray versions will both be released Jan. 10, 2011.
