Fans of the Grammy-nominated band Tonic should be stoked. Not only is the band back on the road, it's also making a stop in Atlantic City for the first time in more than four years. Oh, and they're playing for FREE.

That's right, FREE. In another one of the House of Blues at Showboat's long line of free Party-Pit concerts, the L.A. via N.J. trio is set to take the Party Pit stage this Saturday, June 23, at 11pm.

And Tonic is coming prepared. With a new album reportedly under works and a reinvigorated love of their craft, these guys are ready to bring the party to the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Bassist Dan Lavery checked in with AC Weekly for a candid interview about what motivates the band and what to expect from this weekend's show and more.

Over the years has the song writing process changed at all? Now that you're all grown up with families and kids, are the immediate inspirations different than they were in the 1990s?

It's amazing how great a span of time that is — it's been like 16 years since our first record came out, which is crazy. The difference in the process from Head on Straight in 2002 to the fourth record in 2010 is an amazing amount of maturity in everyone’s playing and ideas and approach. To me, it was not a difficult process. That was actually the fastest we've ever recorded that many songs.

The sound of the record is very organic. But there is definitely a sense of growth and maturity to it.

That's what we hoped for. The people who have been with us since the beginning have recognized it, which is really nice.

What keeps you coming back to the studio? Is it different when you all come back into the studio as opposed to working on solo projects?

It's not always the most harmonious place (laughs). We have our typical relationships. It’s a cliché, but it’s like a marriage. Things aren’t always going perfectly. But a friend of ours pointed out that when the three of [us] are working together and singing together it's something very, very special. We have to take it and appreciate it for a minute, you know? It is definitely something very comfortable and unique.

You're just starting your tour on Friday [June 22] right?
