The Atlantic City Ballet holds one major fundraiser a year, so as you might expect the company will pull out all the stops for its A Midsummer’s Night Dream 5th Annual Wine Tasting event to be held June 17 at Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro in Somers Point.
The night of high culture includes wines, sumptuous hors d’oeuvres and live music.
The highlight of the evening will be a performance by a duet of the company’s dancers performing a pas de duex from the ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream.
“There’s also live music with a guitar player and a violin, and that’s done by dancers as well,” says Phyllis Papa, founding director of the company. “They come to us from a company in Orlando. And, of course there are the wines. We’re going to have seven wine tables to sample this year, three beer tables and even a vodka table. And the food is wonderful. We had the event at Sandi Pointe last year and they just do a magnificent job.”
As part of the event, the ballet’s entire board of directors will be on hand in Midsummer Night garb.
Also on tap for the evening is an auction event featuring items such as a round of golf for four at The Links at Brigantine Beach, a weekend getaway in Lake Placid, NY, exquisite wine baskets from Circle Liquors in Somers Point, fabulous spa packages and more.
Those who order there tickets online, at acballet.org, by Monday June 13 will receive $10 off an individual ticket and $30 off per couple.
Regular ticket prices are $50 per person.
All proceeds benefit educational programs and productions of The Atlantic City Ballet.
Oh, and if you’re wondering how an event can be called a Midsummer’s Night event while it’s still technically spring, well, it’s a trick of the calendar.
"We tried to time it as close to solstice as we could,” Papa says. “But June 21 is a Tuesday.”
The event runs from 6:30-9:30pm. Call 804-1195 or visit acballet.org.
Backstage before, during and after a show is the most exciting place in the world. Adrenaline pumps everywhere, even through the observer, and that’s where I spent last Thursday, Oct. 27, as Phyllis Papa’s Atlantic City Ballet performed 'Dracula' in time for Halloween.
The Atlantic City Ballet is coming to Resorts Hotel and Casino’s Superstar Theater Friday and Sunday, Nov. 4 and 6, for two free shows.
“And it’s so nice not to be in competition with each other anymore. Nobody is judging us. We don’t have to worry about what [judges] Nigel or Mary [Murphy] are going to say. You can relax and just have some fun out there."
