Keeping the music alive is what the Somers Point Jazz Society does year round.
Working hard to promote the musical art form of jazz through local events all over southern New Jersey and especially in Somers Point. They strive to provide opportunities for all community members, both young and old.
Whether you hear regional jazz artists play in an intimate venue or an outdoor concert they are there to present to you all the aspects that jazz music has to offer.
On Monday, Oct. 4, starting at 7pm, featured artists Ed Vezinho on saxophone and Jim Ward on trumpet will be appearing at Sandi Pointe Costal Bistro in Somers Point. Joining them will be their 16-piece jazz ensemble, coming straight out of Atlantic City, where the duo began their new band in 1982.
Vezinho has co-led the Ed Vezinho-Jim Ward Big Band for 28 years. Now, bigger than ever, they have been thrilling audiences throughout the tri-state area. The band plays original compositions while putting a modern-day spin on the big-band style. They have been featured in the annual Somers Point Jazz Festival, the Cape May Jazz Festival, and many public and private schools in and around Atlantic City and Philadelphia.
So if you are in the mood for some swingin’ tunes head out to 908 Shore Rd., in Somers Point, and let the music move your soul.

The Gateway Playhouse in Somers Point was founded in 1910 and moved to its current 280-seat location at Bay and Higbee avenues in the early 1920s. It was purchased by the City of Somers Point in 2006 and has been closed since that time pending much-needed renovations.
The Mulgrew Miller Trio is one of this year’s headlining acts at the 15th annual Somers Point Jazz Society Jazz @ the Point Festival, which runs Thursday through Sunday, March 8-11. Miller’s trio performs two sets (8 and 10pm) Friday, March 9, in the banquet room of Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro (see sidebar for details).
