Friday, Aug. 6, may be one of the best free concerts you'll see this summer at the Jersey shore.

Featuring 2010 Living Blues Award winner Joe Louis Walker (voted 2010's most outstanding musician - guitar), who is constantly on the road this summer with shows booked through November at blues clubs and festivals around the globe, the Somers Point Beach Concert series tonight will attract a ton of blues fans for sure.

Also featuring the son of Larry Coryell, the talented singer-guitarist and songwriter Murali Coryell — who has known Walker for 20 years and teamed up with the blues great for Murali Coryell's 2009 release Sugar Lips — the free concert starts at 7pm and will run to 9pm, weather permitting.

Hopefully the cool blues tunes will inspire Mother Nature to provide a nice bay breeze this evening to comfort the beach crowd, which has suffered an extremely hot and humid few weeks here in the South Jersey region.

Walker, born on Christmas Day 1949 in San Francisco, has been called a "living encyclopedia of the blues," having soaked up the sounds of artists such as T-Bone Walker. early boogie-woogie music and eventually sharing the stage with the likes of American music legends John Lee Hooker, Thelonius Monk, the Soul Stirrers, Steve Miller and Jimi Hendrix. For several years, he was the late great guitarist Mike Bloomfield's roommate.

Over the years he has been a prominent force on the Bay Area blues scene, putting out albums, touring, producing records for other artists and has also done some sensational covers of tunes by the Rolling Stiones, Eric Clapton and Nick Lowe, to name a few, on various tribute albums.

Walker has blues in his blood. His parents were very into the blues and this helped Walker become the amazing talent he is today. Walker's music also suggests strains of other musical influences including R&B, gospel and jazz.

Here's a great clip of Lewis' guitar playing:

As his Web site states, "Both vocally and instrumentally, Joe Louis Walker is indeed a witness for the blues, and the creative, sometimes startling approach to America’s most significant music holds a bright lantern for others to follow."
