For those who require extra incentive to get in a little exercise, the Ruth Newman Shapiro (RNS) Cancer & Heart Fund can deliver the goods.

On Saturday, Aug. 28, the RNS Celebration Run/Walk will start at the Ocean City Sport and Civic Center building (5th Street and the O.C. Boardwalk), and end at the Ocean City High School track.

All proceeds from the event benefit the RNS Cancer Fund, an all-volunteer organization established in 1961 by Rose Newman in memory of her daughter, Ruth Newman Shapiro, who passed away from cancer. In those 49 years over $10 million has been raised and given back to the community in the form of cutting-edge equipment and facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and heart disease in the region. AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation, the Cape Regional Medical Center and Shore Memorial Hospital have all been beneficiaries of RNS.

The day’s events include a 5K run, a 5K walk and a one-mile kids run. The top-three male and female 5K run finishers receive cash prizes ($150 for first, $100 for second and $50 for third places). Awards will be given for several age groups in the 5k run (starting at 14-and-under up to 80-and-over), and there will be a special category for cancer survivors. Ribbons will be awarded to four divisions in the kids run between ages five through 12.

Registration will take place 6:30-7:45am Saturday. The race will start at 8am and the walk and kids run will immediately follow. Registration is $25 and entrants will receive a Celebration Run T-shirt while supplies last. You may register online at rnscancerandheartfund.org.
