Score a Hole-In-One for the MMSC

Returning to Brigantine for the 14th year this Friday, Oct. 22, the annual Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) Golf Tournament will take place at the Links at Brigantine Beach, with registration starting at 10am and a shotgun, scramble start at noon.

This event is a fun way to help raise money for an important local cause while bringing awareness to the public about these unfortunate, stranded animals. Participation in such events, according to its Web site (mmsc.org), helps the MMSC continue its work of rescuing and rehabilitating marine mammals in distress.

The cost of the tournament is $145 per golfer, which includes registration, greens fees, golf cart with GPS location system, box lunch, and awards reception at the Links clubhouse, a goodie bag and many fabulous prizes.

Contests include closest-to-the-pin and longest drive, and any golfer who scores a hole-in-one will be entered for a chance to win a new car.

Started in 1978, the private, non-profit MMSC has responded to over 3,450 strandings of whales, dolphins, seals and sea turtles that washed ashore.

All proceeds from events such as the annual golf tournament go directly toward the MMSC’s mission of rescue and rehabilitation, according to the center’s director, Robert Schoelkopf.

“The Stranding Center’s goal is to provide continual and improved rehabilitation services for these animals,” says Schoelkopf.

“Our aspirations of accomplishment are gauged on the number of animals we can successfully rehabilitate and return to the wild.” For more information call 266-0538 or visit mmsc.org.
