The familiar sound of sizzling summer jazz along that famous Atlantic City Boardwalk stretch from Missouri to Ohio avenues is back again. The 10th annual Jazz on the Beach Series kicks off Thursday evening (July 2) at 7pm at Kennedy Plaza on the Boardwalk at the historic Chicken Bone Beach in Atlantic City. Thursday evening's opening act is local sensation the Eddie Morgan Trio. At 8:30pm, headliner Steve Turre hits the Kennedy Plaza stage. Next Thursday's show (July 9) opens with Atlantic City born and raised Jazz organist Dan Fogel. Philadelphia saxophonist Bootsie Barnes will follow Fogel as the headliner. Other acts in this summer's lineup include the Hassan Abdullah Quintet and Monette Sudler (July 16), the CBB Youth Jazz Ensemble of Camden and Orrin Evans (Aug. 6), the Tony Day Trio and Tia Fuller (Aug. 13), and Mysterious Traveler with Helen Sung (Aug. 20). Performances are free to the public and will be held at Kennedy Plaza on the Boardwalk. All shows begin at 7pm. Visit chickenbonebeach.org.

A real celebration of the life of Hassan Abdullah (aka Stanley Barber) took place on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 27, at Wash’s Inn in Pleasantville.
'I never want to be a gimmicky woman in jazz. It’s a by-product of what I do, because I am a woman, but I always wanted to be a great musician. ...I like wearing dresses and heels, you know, make-up. It’s funny, because I used to try to blend in when I first moved to New York. I was physically very girly, but I wore slacks and pants, because I wanted to blend in.'
The Somers Point Jazz Society is presenting a free musical and educational program in Ocean City on Sundays (2-3:15pm) during the month of July.
One reason the Cape Bank Jazz @ The Point festival has not only survived but thrived regardless of the economy is that it’s given jazz fans top-flight entertainment for a reasonable fee. That’s certainly the case with the 13th version of the festival, which takes place this Thursday through Sunday, March 10-13, at three venues in Somers Point.
