Dylan Tunes at Dante Hall

-- Jeff Schwachter-->

Bob Dylan released his 46th album, Together Through Life, this past Tuesday. On May 24 he celebrates his 68th birthday. On July 1, he kicks off a summer tour of U.S. minor league baseball parks with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp. (Can someone book him at the former Bernie Robbins Stadium in Atlantic City?)

For Dylan fans, you won't have to wait any later than this Friday, May 1, to hear an assortment of Dylan's tunes played live. Dante Hall presents Bob Fest, featuring New Jersey's Pat Guadagno and his band Tired Horses. (What Dylan album is the band's name taken from? E-mail editor@atlanticcityweekly.com with the correct answer & you'll win a prize.)

The show, which starts at 8pm, will feature three guitars, bass and drums and dozens of Dylan tunes. Guadagno phoned in from the road and told us: "We stick mainly to the songs from the 1960s, but we throw in a few 'off-the-beaten path' numbers, too."

In previous years, Bob Fest, which Guadagno has been doing for about a decade, has featured some lesser-known (and very long) Dylan gems such as "Brownsville Girl" (from the 1986 album Knocked Out Loaded), "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" (from the 1966 album Blonde on Blonde) and "Tombstone Blues" from the previous year's monumental album Highway 61 Revisited.

"I'm an old folkie," says Guadagno, who tours by himself throughout the year. He says even if you're not a Dylan fan, Guadagno's own arrangements make for a sweet trip back to the 1960s.

Happy birthday, Bob.

Bob Fest takes place Friday, May 1, at Dante Hall in Atlantic City. Show time is 8pm. For more information, visit dantehall.org or call 344-8877.

President Barack Obama on Bob Dylan: "The guy is so steeped in this stuff that he can just come up with some new arrangement, and the song sounds completely different. Finishes the song, steps off the stage — I'm sitting right in the front row — comes up, shakes my hand, sort of tips his head, gives me just a little grin, and then leaves. And that was it — then he left. That was our only interaction"
