2006: A Roller Coaster Year

A lot of good things, but also a lot of not-so-good things, happened in Atlantic City this year. Here are just a few of the most memorable.

Among the A.C. Debuts:

Barbra Streisand, Paul Simon, Madonna, the Who, Mariah Carey, The Pier at Caesars, Gnarls Barkley, Shakira, Cirque du Soleil Delirium, the Strokes, Chris Brown, Wolfgang Puck, Stephen Starr, Fiona Apple and Black Eyed Peas.

January

Jan. 21: For the first time in its 84-year history, the Miss American Pageant take place outside of Atlantic City.

Jan. 26: The new Atlantic City Wind Farm is featured on the cover of AC Weekly.


February

Feb. 27: Jay Leno holds up the Jan. 26 issue of AC Weekly ("Tourism that Blows") on NBC's Tonight Show during his funny headlines bit.


March

March 18: At Boardwalk Hall, Rasim Rahman defeats James Toney in a majority draw to retain his WBC heavyweight title.


April

April 15: Smoking ban in New Jersey goes into effect; also the Atlantic City Surf renames Sandcastle Stadium to Bernie Robbins Stadium.
