ATLANTIC CITY — Thanks to a save from the judges during “Top Ten” week, there are eleven American Idols on tour this year, and all of them can really sing. The sexy low notes from 17-year-old country singer Scotty McCreery led to his winning the competition, and with another country artist, Lauren Alaina, coming in second, the finals of the show had a Nashville vibe.

However, that doesn’t mean country music is dominating the 2011 American Idols Live Tour, which comes to Boardwalk Hall this Saturday. This group of singers is acclaimed for its musical diversity for good reason. There is an appreciation of jazz from Haley Reinhart and Casey Abrams, hard rock from James Durbin, pure pop from Pia Toscano, Paul McDonald, Stefano Langone and Thia Magia and the R&B of Jacob Lusk and Naima Adedapo.

Since the show, McCreery and Alaina have both signed with Mercury Nashville/19 Recordings/Interscope and released debut singles with albums due in the fall. Toscano also has an album due from Interscope in the fall and rumor has it that Durbin, Abrams and Reinhart will also ink record deals.

Pleasantville’s own Rodney Jerkins is one of the producers for Toscano’s debut album. Her first single, “This Time,” was released on digital format July 12. In an interview with Atlantic City Weekly, Toscano talks about the tour and her future plans.

Let’s get the question everyone asks out of the way: how surprised were you when you eliminated from Idol?

I wasn’t really surprised. I had a gut feeling the night before. I was just really sad that it was ending so soon. I felt like I was just starting to get comfortable. Everything happens for a reason and it worked out for the best

Review: American Idols Live

One of the best parts about the American Idols Tour is seeing how the performers have improved thanks to their experience of touring. Being able to relax and sing while being adored rather than judged is a major theme when the performers talk about the experience.

Pia Toscano Interview

"I’m already about eight songs in on the album. It will be released some time in the fall. It’s a pop album with an R&B influence. It’d edgy, it’s powerful. I'm getting to work with some of my favorite producers, including my dream producer, Rodney Jerkins. I think people are going to see a different side of me then [they saw] on the show."
