Mythica headlines the Irish Festival at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.

ATLANTIC CITY — Sure, the obligatory green food coloring will once again find its way into copious kegs of beer when St. Patrick’s Day weekend (March 16-18) arrives, but there’s so much more to look forward to if you’re fortunate enough to be in the Atlantic City area then.

In fact, fun activity related to the Day When Everyone’s Irish starts even sooner. Next Saturday, March 3, marks the return of the annual Running of the Leprechauns at the Tropicana. Led by Hooters girls (what more reason do you need?), the race starts 10pm on the Boardwalk outside the Trop and ends at The Quarter, at which time participants can take advantage of food and drink specials at a variety of restaurants and bars. Those that promise to be in the St. Paddy’s Day spirit include A Dam Good Sports Bar, Firewaters, Hooters, Planet Rose and, of course, RiRa Irish Pub.

A Dam Good Sports Bar will also host a Sexy Leprechaun Contest with a $250 prize for the winner. Tropicana is offering participants a 20 percent room discount throughout the weekend, based on availability. Registration is 8-9pm at the Trop Hooters. Go here for more information.

The Dropkick Murphys, a seven-man band blending traditional Irish instruments with high-energy punk-rock rhythms, is returning to the House of Blues in Showboat on Friday, March 9. The show starts 8pm and tickets are $26 and $36. On their seventh full-length studio album, Going Out In Style, Dropkick Murphys throw a “raucous and rollicking romp overflowing with energy, folk soul, and Irish spirit.” For more information, go here.

The 27th Annual Atlantic City St. Patrick’s Day Parade is scheduled for Saturday, March 10, at 1pm. The parade starts at States Avenue (near House of Blues), then heads south along the Boardwalk to Albany Avenue. Other events will include the installation of the parade’s Grand Marshal at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Roman Catholic Church at 4pm Saturday. This year’s Grand Marshal will be newly sworn-in Assemblyman Chris Brown. On Friday, March 9, the traditional raising of the Irish flag will take place at 1pm at the Police and Firemen’s Memorial Plaza. For more information, go here

Trump Taj Mahal is offering a Lucky Leprechaun Sweepstakes throughout St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Cash and bonus slot dollars will be awarded at the top of every hour from 6-10pm Friday, March 16, and both Saturday and Sunday, March 17-18, from 2-6pm. From Thursday, March 1, through Saturday, March 17, guests can enter the Go Green Toyota Prius Sweepstakes with one lucky winner driving home in a new car. Also on Saturday, March 17, country music star Eric Church (pictured right) will perform with Brantley Gilbert and Drake White as part of the Blood, Sweat and Beers Tour at the Taj’s Mark G. Etess Arena. The show starts 7:30pm and tickets are $33.75 and $41.50. For more information, go here.

Resorts Casino Hotel is hosting an Irish Festival on Saturday, March 17, from noon-7pm in the Ballroom (on the dining level). Participants can enjoy live entertainment, authentic Irish food, green beer and much more. Admission is $5, and free for Star Card members. Doors open at 11am.

The festival at Resorts will feature award-winning Celtic band Mythica, which will play three sets throughout the day. Calling themselves “Celtic fusionists,” Mythica consists of Melissa Cox, Matt Smith, Erin Flynn, Tim Kelly and Michele McCann. They fuse Irish and Scottish instruments (the hurdy gurdy, mandolin, fiddle, bass, woodwinds, bodhran) and influences with genres like Breton, funk, Hawaiian, and chicha (South American surf rock) to produce “a musical melting pot tied together with powerful vocals, addictive melodies, and provocative lyrics.”

“We love playing in Atlantic City,” says lead singer Cox in a media release. “The lively and fun atmosphere connects us and our music to the audience, and everybody has a great time. We are thrilled to play at Resorts for the first time.”

Irish Pub Is Keepin’ It Real

The Irish Pub is at the base of an old (circa 1905) Victorian-style hotel building, and has been run by Dick and Cathy Burke since 1972. Entering during daylight hours may require an adjustment to the change in light, or lack thereof, but once done you’ll see that this is no cookie-cutter pub replica.

'We really do write as a group. We’ve had band members come and go over the years, and we always say that some of the best stuff comes from the newest band members because they seem to have more fresh ideas. I think everybody in the world has a couple of Dropkick Murphy songs in them waiting to come out.'
