Pre-Memorial Day Weekend is packed with exciting entertainment options

Usually the weekend before a holiday is relatively quiet, with the casinos and other venues holding back their big events for the holiday weekend that follows. And while there is an amazing amount of anticipation surrounding Memorial Weekend with Beyonce choosing Revel for her first post-baby concerts, this weekend isn’t exactly sloppy seconds.
Beginning with Revel, the casino kicks off the official opening of its 5,000-seat venue Ovation Hall with concerts tonight (May 18) with Maroon 5 and tomorrow with the Black Keys. The casino is also presenting a major dining event, the Taste of Revel, featuring presentations by the casino’s superstar chef lineup.
The 50th Anniversary Tour of the Beach Boys featuring the reunion of Brian Wilson with his original bandmates takes place at the Borgata on Saturday night. Other shows in town this weekend are Joan Rivers at Borgata Saturday, Chickenfoot Friday at the House of Blues Friday, Boys II Men Saturday at Resorts and Penn & Teller Friday and Saturday at Harrah’s Resort.
Over at the Tropicana, KC and the Sunshine Band with have you rocking your “Boogie Shoes” with a performance at the Trop on Saturday, May 19, followed by the band being the first inductees into the Boogie Nights Hall of Fame at the nightclub following their performance.
Beyond the casinos, jazz great Sonny Fortune will be playing on his 73rd birthday Saturday at Dante Hall and Historic Smithville presents its annual Mayfest Saturday.
Add in the always enticing beach and Boardwalk, and Atlantic City is certainly rolling out the red carpet a weekend before the holiday.
Donna Summer 1948-2012
It didn't feel right to talk about all the great entertainment with weekend without mentioning the passing of the ultimate disco diva Donna Summer, who died yesterday after a long bout with lung cancer. She was a regular headliner in Atlantic City and by all accounts a terrific person. Atlantic City Weekly columnist Ray Schweibert did a great interview with Summer you can read here.
