Crystal Bowersox killed it last night with her vocal of "People Get Ready."
It was “Inspiration Songs” week on American Idol with guest mentor Alicia Keys (I didn’t know she was that tall, or maybe Crystal Bowersox is that short?). The rest of the group were damn lucky that MamaSox was last because she blew away the field with her emotional, tearful rendition of the Impressions’ gospel-tinged “People Get Ready.”
With no instrument to hide behind, she was emotionally naked and delivered an amazing, unforgettable vocal. She began acapella, met the strings head-on with her soaring vocals and created just enough vocal changes to keep the song fresh while retaining every bit of emotionalism to the point that she burst out in tears as she ended the song. Her dad was in the audience, and the news just broke the day before that she was missing her baby so much, she told Ryan Seacrest she wanted to quit the competition and go home two weeks back. Apparently, she was a bit miffed that her moment of doubt was leaked to the media.
No matter, Crystal is ready to stay on top to the finish.
The only other singer that was worthy of sharing the stage with her last night was Lee DeWyze, who did a nice job on Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer.” The rest of the gang were pretty forgettable, in particular, Casey James is in a "same old, same old" rut. Inspirational Week and he does … “Don’t Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow)”? Really?
The worst vocal of the night was Aaron Kelly with “I Believe I Can Fly”; the rest were killing time.
The grades:
Crystal Bowersox A
Lee DeWyze A-
Siobhan Magnus B-
Mike Lynche C
Tim Urban C
Casey James C-
Aaron Kelly D
In 2009, the American Idols Tour played at Boardwalk Hall, a 12,000-seat venue. This year, the show is taking place at the much smaller Mark G. Etess Arena at the Trump Taj Mahal this Saturday.

“I have not been a fan of American Idol at all. I see it as just another canned music source void of the true soul of music, but Crystal has got me watching. I have been in the music industry for the past 20 years as a performer. promoter and fan (mainly acoustic/folk) and I know when I see a soul who "gets it" and Crystal is one. Crystal does not just sing, she lives the music deep in her heart and soul, it is part of her and she has the ability to make it a part of everyone listening. This is what makes a great performer.
I have predicted that she will not win AI because she is not flashy enough, but I may be wrong. I hope that her presence will begin a new look at music that is not rooted in dollars and radio play. It is when music evokes deep emotion that it IS music.”
