Lee DeWyse rocked Shania with "You're Still the One."
We are down to the final six, and when frontrunner Crystal Bowersox decided to go the traditional country route on Shania Twain night with “No Ones Need To Know,” she got her first really negative comments.
Not that she was concerned, but just the fact that she has been so dramatic most of the season and she went light and charming last night seemed to throw the judges for a loop. They always want the contestants to change it up and show another side, yet when Crystal did just that she was criticized. I just hope this doesn’t mean she is in trouble tonight. I don’t really think so, but you never know — remember when Chris Daughtry had to settle for fouth place?
Someone I think will be in trouble is Siobhan Magnus. She offered a terrific finish with her rendition of “Any Man of Mine,” but she started off with pitch problems, although the judges never mentioned it. They gave her a pass, except for Simon, who suggested her big notes at the end were a bit much. I thought they made the performance after a shaky start.
Lee DeWyse did a terrific job on “You’re Still The One,” mixing his gruff rocker vibe with some sweet melody highlights that had the judges raving. I’m still hoping for a Lee-Crystal finale.
Mike Lynche did a typically emotional rendition of “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing” that had Shania tearing up. He could be a successful singer thanks to that emotional connection, but he isn’t the best vocalist from this group.
Aaron Kelly and Casey James both bounced back from mediocre performances last week. James finally showed off his pipes with the lovely ballad “Don’t.” He really can sing something outside his blues/rock comfort zone and make it work. Kelly is the true country crooner of this bunch and he did a nice job on “You’ve Got A Way.” It was his best vocal in weeks.
So who goes home? This is when it really gets tough; I think it might be Siobhan or Mike, but I’m always nervous about Lee because he isn’t cute enough for younger voters.
The grades:
Lee DeWyse A-
Casey James A-
Aaron Kelly B+
Mike Lynche B+
Crystal Bowersox B
Siobhan Magnus B-
In 2009, the American Idols Tour played at Boardwalk Hall, a 12,000-seat venue. This year, the show is taking place at the much smaller Mark G. Etess Arena at the Trump Taj Mahal this Saturday.
