There are always moments on America Idol that are “what the hell happened?” shockers. Last season’s such moment was the elimination of talented diva Pia Toscano, who had to settle for a ridiculous ninth place finish on the show. However, while the moment was disappointing at the time, it worked out quite well. The people in the industry took notice of her talent and she is more than halfway through her debut album, working at Interscope with Pleasantville’s own Rodney Jerkins as one of her producers. Her first single, “This Time,” was released on digital format July 12. That never happens for a typical ninth place finisher on Idol.

Toscano is someone who never gives up. She auditioned for American Idol four previous times before making it on the show, and is now enjoying the fruits of her determination as one of the most popular performers on the American Idols Live Tour, which arrives in Atlantic City on Saturday, Aug. 13.

From a stairwell on the road (reception was bad inside the venue at Charlotte, NC), Toscano talked about the tour and her upcoming album.

Let’s get the question everyone asks out of the way: how surprised were you when you eliminated from Idol?
I wasn’t really surprised. I had a gut feeling the night before. I was just really sad that it was ending so soon. I felt like I was just starting to get comfortable. Everything happens for a reason and it worked out for the best

Once you were eliminated, people came to your defense. I understand you got some encouraging celebrity tweets.
That was the cool part and helped me get through the elimination. I heard from Ellen DeGeneres, Tom Hanks, Ashton Kutcher and the Idol fans first and foremost

How is the tour going? Is it everything you expected?
The tour is really so much fun. There is not so much pressure now, you’re not being judged on every song. We get to go out there and do our thing.

Getting back to things happening for a reason, you already have a record deal and your first single out, so you get to promote it every night on tour.
Yes, that doesn’t happen too often and I feel very honored and blessed that I have the opportunity to do that.

“She has a great voice and the looks, but there's something missing when she performs. And it shows from the responses to her--you either love her or you "hate" her. RE: her video--is there a reason she has to continually rub her body and pose suggestively? if that's the answer to her lack of stage presence, what stage were they aiming for? All that was missing was a "pole".”
