The third annual WXGN Ocean City Beach Fest will feature a dozen bands performing to raise money for the Nashville flood victims
The band Reilly will headline the WXGN Ocean City Beach Fest for the second straight year
The broadcasting format that WXGN 90.5 FM adheres to is similar to the approach radio stations used to take years ago but seldom do anymore — one that’s dubbed album-oriented radio (or AOR) that offers musicians the opportunity to showcase a wider range of their original material.
“Part of what I think local radio needs to do is encourage more young up-and-coming bands,” says Bill Link, station manager of WXGN out of Ocean City. “When I grew up with radio as a kid in the ’70s, there were a lot of AOR radio stations putting on a ton of events that covered a variety of styles of new music. It was pretty common for the Philadelphia stations to host several concerts per year, and WXGN is a throwback to those days.”
Nicknamed “The X,” the station is also highly committed to the humanitarian causes that allow it to operate as a listener-supported 501(c)(3) non-profit group. WXGN hosts several charitable fundraisers each year, including the third annual Ocean City Beach Fest scheduled for this Saturday, May 29, at the Ocean City Music Pier. The event will feature about a dozen bands performing from roughly 3:30-9:30pm at the Pier (Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace), and proceeds will be donated to a Nashville flood relief fund called Conduit Mission (conduitmission.org).
Past WXGN events served as fundraisers for Blood:Water Mission (an organization created to provide African communities with safe drinking water, and founded by the Grammy award-winning, Nashville-based, Christian rock band Jars of Clay), and the recent natural disasters that plagued Haiti and New Orleans.
For the second straight year, the five-person, symphonic folk-rock band Reilly will headline the concert along with alternative rockers SiLOam. Other genres include pop rock, blues, hard core and worship rock, and other bands appearing include True Witness, I Am History, Alissa Mae, Doorway 320, Broken, Chris Low. Prayzym 5, Synaesthesia, The Last Breath and World Apart. Typically headline bands perform 40-minute sets and the others perform for 20 to 30 minutes each.
Doors to the O.C. Beach Fest open at 3pm, and tickets are $12 in advance through itickets.com, or by calling 800-965-9324. Tickets at the door are $15. Children age 5 and under are admitted free. Listen to 90.5 FM for chances to win free tickets.
