Casino will bring acclaimed a cappella group to town this summer
Straight No Chaser will be spending the summer onstage at Harrah's.
For the last few years, Harrah’s Resorts has brought a Broadway show to their main stage for a summer run. Last year it was A Bronx Tale with Chazz Palminteri and the year before The Wedding Singer. This year the casino is changing things up by presenting Straight No Chaser for an eight week run July 2 to August 28.
Perhaps the success of the Fox TV series Glee inspired this booking. The acclaimed all male, 10-member a cappella group will bring their harmonies to Harrah’s Resort Wednesday through Sunday at 8pm. Tickets are $25, $30 and $35.
The group will present songs from their new album With A Twist. The album features harmonious renditions of modern classics like Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under The Bridge,” Coldplay’s “Fix You,” Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” and Oasis’ “Wonderwall.”
So where did Straight No Chaser come from? In the fall of 2008, ATCO/Atlantic Records unveiled a rather unlikely major label release. It was an album of Christmas music recorded by Straight No Chaser, an a cappella group that hadn’t sung together since their college days a decade earlier. The result was a most improbable success story. Holiday Spirits spent 14 days in the No. 1 slot on Amazon, and five days in the top spot overall on iTunes.
“Back in college, we started this group just for fun — no one ever thought of it as a possible career path,” says SNC’s Randy Stine. “It was hard to comprehend that ten years after our last performance, we were back together recording for a major label, with an album that reached number one on iTunes, heading out on an international tour. Along with all the fun is a lot of work, but it’s a complete labor of love, and one that we never dreamed possible.”
Since then the group has expanded its musical horizons, culminating with an upcoming summer by the Bay at Harrah’s.
While both groups are different, in particular with SNC’s ability to mimic musical instruments and Human Nature backed by a smokin’ R&B band, they share a passion for magnificent harmonies.
Granted, Straight No Chaser has only been in town about three weeks and may still be reaping the benefits of its novelty status, but a packed, mid-week Harrah’s Concert Venue crowd gave the a cappella group a standing ovation following its July 7 show ...
