Valentine's Day Dos and Don'ts

For some, Valentine’s Day is an anticipated spectacle, and for others it is more often than not a day of absolute dread. Couples celebrate each other’s presence with dates, gifts and surprises while singles try to score dates with surprises and gifts.

There are some Valentine’s dos and don’ts that both guys and girls should always be aware of:

Girls, don’t go out with the typical shallow douchebag — instead find a real man. Chances are, you’ve stumbled upon a lot of great guys throughout life, but they’re “too nice” or “too much of a friend” for you to date, so instead, you subject yourself to the seemingly attractive, but unambiguous jerk so when you inevitably break up, you can say how all men suck and probably cry about it to that “nice guy” friend of yours.

Guys, don’t go out with a sleazy girl knowing that they’re just in it for fun and then get your hearts all wrapped up in someone who’s not at all interested in any kind of commitment. Instead, go for a real woman. Chances are, you’ve come across a lot of great girls in life, but they’re “too much of a friend” to date or not as easy as you’d prefer. Instead, you rather go out with someone easy that you don't have to win over so when you inevitably break up, you can say how all women suck and probably cry about it to that “nice girl” friend.

This Valentine’s Day, if you already have that significant other or you’re looking to take someone special out on a date, here are some of the dos and don’ts for dates. Do you fall into any of these categories?

The Don’t Dates:

The Cheapo
Times might be tough in 2012, but that doesn’t mean cheaping out on your date is OK. You didn’t have to go all out and spend a ton of money, but you should have planned ahead. However, a cheesy card and some candy will not suffice. Don’t worry though, your sheepishness has provided an opportunity for you to be resourceful and inventive.

The Shallow
This kind of date leads in an obvious direction from the very start. A movie in a house, apartment or hotel, we all know what you want and you’ll do whatever you can to get it. Way to make the holiday all about you and your physical needs. This is your time to impress and surprise, show some creative wit! C'mon!

The Unimaginative

Flowers and candy, maybe a teddy bear — you’re ridiculous. Do you always do exactly what society tells you or do you have a mind of your own? Come on, think for yourself, create something of your own, isn’t your girl worth it?

The Do Dates:

The Adventurer
This idea of a date is more of an expedition such as a journey or a road trip to a neighboring town or city, doing something new and different that the two of you haven’t done before. A new place to explore is always a ton of fun and creates a lasting memory.

The Romantic
Everything is a surprise from the special note on the doorstep the night before, to the date itself — you'll fall nothing short of epic. Tonight you unleash your creativity, from stargazing to beach cuddling; your idealistic enchantment is in full swing.

The Empire
This date works better if you enjoy role-playing games and time travel. Forget what people might think, bust out those Roaring '20s-era style clothes and change your names for the night. Turn on some Jersey Rhythm Devils and stroll the beach after a fancy dinner at The Knife & Fork or Chelsea Prime.  Maybe you should book a reservation at a casino. This date is for those of the vivid imagination.

As for you romantic singles and "friend zone" counterparts, don’t fret, the world needs your tolerance in the shopping malls, late nights on the phone, your party escorting services and your inclination to be a sucker for a cute smile. For all of the ridiculous things that you have endured, for your considerate respect and modesty, your well-deserved vindication is coming.

In the meantime, check out “To Whom it May Concern" by The Civil Wars, because it was written for you.

“I always seem to be at the early stages of a relationship around valentines day, and usually dinner and a movie seems the safest way to go. As long as you can find something personal to share with your significant other, even if it's a little cliche, it will make a respectable dent in what ever you are trying to accomplish.”

“it's so true, most girls go for jerks and a lot of guys go for easy girls... both miss out and overlook the genuine good guys/girls in front of them. Society, so backwards /:”

Love Stories
By AC Weekly Staff

Each year, as Valentine's Day approaches, lovers rush to the mall and stress over what gift to buy for their significant other. This year, instead of diamonds, roses or chocolates, an assortment of AC Weekly readers give a different meaning to the holiday -- which has become rather materialistic over the years -- by telling their own special tales of love. Whether couples survived World War II together, or fell in love over "boat drinks" and Jimmy Buffet songs, they remind us of what this holiday is really about. So instead of indulging yourself in heart-shaped candies, or maxing your credit card on shiny jewelry, remind your other half about the first time you met, and enjoy yourself by reading some of these unique stories. Blind date I met my husband Bob on Oct. 31, 1951; we got married Dec. 15, 1951 -- 45 days in all. Bob was a blind date. He had a car and I didn't go out with guys who had cars. I told him that and he said we could get a cab. I said he looked safe, but I told him I had some rules -- You don't touch or kiss and I don't drink, swear...
