Golf in Ocean City
Address: 26th St. and Bay Ave., Ocean City
Phone: 399-1315
Details: What’s particularly unique about the city-owned course is that it has 12 holes, not the standard 18 or nine. It was designed in the early 1960s by one of the most recognizable names in the southern New Jersey golf industry, the late Leo Fraser, a past president of the PGA who also designed Mays Landing Golf & Country Club and formerly owned Atlantic City Country Club.
The par-37 course is short (1,560 total yards), with most holes being par-3s. Its shortest hole is only about 60 yards long, and its longest is the par-4 10th. In-season greens fees are just $12 and $10 after Nov. 1. In-season rates for seniors (62 and over) and juniors (14 and under) are $10.
“We’re very affordable to anyone [not just Ocean City residents] who’d like to enjoy a round of golf,” says Ocean City director of recreation Wendy Moyle.
The course closes after the Thanksgiving holiday and re-opens April 1. While short and somewhat oddly designed at 12 holes, it differs from what is typically called a “chip-n-putt” that requires only a pitching wedge and putter, and has tee boxes, fairways and bunkers.
“One requirement we have is that every golfer must carry a bag,” says Moyle. “We are very novice friendly and get a lot of children who are just learning the game who come with their parents and grandparents. But because we are located at the Jersey shore, and it sort of goes with the territory, our fairways are narrow and it can still be quite challenging for the more advanced golfers to make par.”
Golf clinics for children are held in the spring, summer and fall. The course has a pro shop that sells golfing supplies, and has clubs and bags available for rent.
