Mays Landing's Joanna Coe lines up a shot with her dad/caddy.

Sherri Steinhauer is one of two players who have played in every ShopRite LPGA Classic. Today, the 47-year-old used her experience on the Bay Course at Seaview – A Dolce Resort to shoot a superb opening round of 64 on the par 71 course. It was an amazing accomplishment for a player who was sidelined last year with surgeries on both hips.

Coming in at 65 were Natalie Gulbis and Spain's Tania Elosegui. One of the tour’s top players, Japan's Ai Miyazato who has three wins this season, was two strokes back at 66 with a group of players that also included Jeong Jang, Kris Tamulis, Inbee Park and Catriona Matthews.

Paula Creamer, making her return to competition after a serious injury to her thumb, was part of a logjam of players tied at four under, including Brittany Lincicome, Suzann Petterson, Grace Park and another veteran, Laura Davies.

Joanna Coe, the 20-year-old local amateur from Mays Landing, an Oakcrest High graduate, won Monday’s qualifier to earn a place in the field. She struggled on the second half of the course and finished with a plus four 75. Michelle Wie ended her day with a plus three 74.

Former ShopRite champion Cristie Kerr was three under and another former ShopRite champ, Juli Inkster, was at two under, as was 2006 defending ShopRite champion Seon Hwa Lee.

Round two of three begins at 7:15am tomorrow.
