Partying Hard at the
Atlantic City Marathon
By Michael Pritchard

ATLANTIC CITY — The organizers of this year’s Atlantic
City Marathon, organized through the Katz JCC in Margate, have clearly made a decision.
Let’s spice things up a bit.
Yes, they’ve got a 53-year-old marathon tradition and the race is still a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. More than 3,000 runners have already signed up for the events (which include a half marathon and a 10K and 5K run), easily topping last year’s 2,700 runners and with more likely to register on race day, Sunday, Oct. 16.
And this year a new course design is in effect to take better advantage of Atlantic City’s northside Boardwalk and the scenic back-bay views of Downbeach.
So the racing part is there and going strong.

'Shakers' Get Star Treatment

By Whitney Ullman

The Palm goes Hollywood this week as in its theme for the sold-out "Movers. Shakers. Difference Makers" luncheon to benefit Gilda's Club of South Jersey. All guests will be walking down the red carpet, photographed by a group of paparazzi and asked spunky questions by host Joan Rivers (a.k.a. Gary DeMato, a performer at Resort's revue show Believe - Diva's In a Man's World). This is going to be a who's-who event from attendees to honorees. The event takes place Friday, Sept. 16, at the Palm inside the Quarter at Tropicana. Tickets are $150; start time is 11:30am. To be an award recipient is a huge honor and congrats go to Barbara Gomes, the wife of Resorts' CEO Dennis Gomes; Lynn Dooley a long-time event chair; and Phyllis Lacca, of Masterpiece Advertising. A special treat will be a guest appearance from fourth generation Palm owner Bruce Bozzi Jr. He is making a special trip to Atlantic City from Los Angeles to attend the event. Plus let's not forget the man of the hour, Palm general manager Paul Sandler, who's helped to raise $400,000 to date. This is an annual event that should definitely be on your radar. Speaking of putting things on your radar,...

Local Music Needs to Be Heard

By Raymond Tyler

Dear local musicians, DJs
and venues that provide a forum for live, local music:
Please excite me, surprise me, be incredible and think big! Or think small — but think differently, think creatively, think funky and think new. I have a music column and I host and produce radio shows, but there have been times when it seemed as though what was available on the local music scene had just skipped town under the radar.
Think of this as a two-part request; the first part is an appeal to contact me. Southern New Jersey venues that are not being fully utilized — let’s set up a night of fun and let some great artists and fans enjoy your venue. DJs who are playing beyond the Boardwalk and doing groovy sets in little cubbyholes where...
