Jazz drummers Chris Brown and Doug Martin perform with their bands at two Shore Road establishments in Somers Point this Saturday
As it has been wont to do, the Somers Point Jazz Society will host some brilliant musicians when it kicks off its fourth annual Blue Moon Brewery Winter Jazz Series this Saturday, Nov. 14, with two shows.
Led by Chris Brown, former Marine Corps drummer and present history professor/assistant director of the Rutgers Summer Jazz Institute, the band Itutu will make its East Coast debut at Sandi Point, formerly Mac’s Restaurant, at 908 Shore Road in Somers Point. The performance will take place from 8-11pm. Son of noted Motown drummer Mel Brown, Chris Brown will be accompanied by Lance Murphy on tenor and soprano saxophone, Alex Collins on piano and Yasushi Nakamura on bass.
Next-door neighbor Gregory’s Restaurant (900 Shore Rd.) will be hosting a quintet fronted by another drummer, Doug Martin, called Out of Business that will perform from 8:30-11:30pm. Martin started playing drums at the age of four, and went on to graduate from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is a regular drummer with the Joe Mancini Trio every Thursday night at Steve & Cookie’s Restaurant in Margate. Joining him are tenor saxophonist Michael Pedicin, trumpeter Joe Breidenstine, pianist Jim Ridl and bassist Andy Lalasis.
Somers Point Jazz Society members and students with valid ID are admitted free. All others will be charged $10 at the door, and the entry fee includes admittance to both venues.
The Mulgrew Miller Trio is one of this year’s headlining acts at the 15th annual Somers Point Jazz Society Jazz @ the Point Festival, which runs Thursday through Sunday, March 8-11. Miller’s trio performs two sets (8 and 10pm) Friday, March 9, in the banquet room of Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro (see sidebar for details).
