If you are of a certain age, you might remember 1950s-era biblical movie epics as special TV events in the 1960s and ’70s, often during the holiday season. The biggest of these was the Charlton Heston-starring The Ten Commandments (1956), directed by the king of spectacle, Cecil B. DeMille.

Cinematic Stocking Stuffers

As a film critic, I’ve always loved giving the gift of movies to friends and family during the holiday season. Some are obvious choices — the terrific Guardians of the Galaxy was released this week — but I also love surprising folks with sleeper hits that aren’t as well known, or Blu-Rays with great extras.

Before seeing this movie, my knowledge of Stephen Hawking was that he was a brilliant scientist whose body was ravaged by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or, more familiarly, Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Local Girl Cierra Kaler-Jones is Crowned Miss New Jersey 2014 in Ocean City

Galloway Township resident Cierra Kaler-Jones was crowned Miss New Jersey on Saturday night, June 14, in Ocean City. The 21-year-old Rutgers University senior and Absegami High graduate won the judges over with her platform of “Empowering Today’s Youth Through Arts Education” and her dance to a Beyonce song in the talent portion.
