Predictions for the Academy Awards this Sunday
Mo'Nique in 'Precious'
Will it be Avatar or The Hurt Locker? Despite this year’s major change to 10 best-picture nominations, it is a two-movie race, with a great chance that Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow will be the the first woman to earn a best director Oscar. The supporting performances are a lock and most handicappers figure it is time for “The Dude,” a.k.a. Jeff Bridges, to take home a golden boy.
Here are my predictions and preferences for the major categories, plus my quick picks for the rest of the awards. The Academy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, March 7, 8pm, on ABC with Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin as co-hosts.
Best Supporting Actor
o Matt Damon, Invictus
o Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
o Christopher Plummer, The Last Station
o Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
o Christoph Waltz, Inglorious Basterds
Prediction: Christoph Waltz
Preference: Christoph Waltz — one of two overwhelming favorites of the night.
Best Supporting Actress
o Penélope Cruz, Nine
o Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air
o Maggie Gyllenhaal, Crazy Heart
o Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
o Mo’Nique, Precious: Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire
Prediction: Mo’Nique
