PBL (an acronym for Peanut Butter Lovesicle) is a newly formed band of family that have pioneered the local bar-scene, lead ambiguous lifestyles, and have even managed to become an ice cream flavor and pizza special at two establishments. Their shows are high-energy rock kamikazes supplemented with an uncomfortably awkward brand of humor. They sport vintage gear, including a monster 1930's 26" Ludwig kick drum (a la John Bonham), a mid 60's Guild Starfire bass, and Fender/Gibson Custom Shop Reissue instruments.
The brothers, after just two years, have become a household name in Ocean City - a town that caters to a population of 200,000+ residents in the summer. It only takes one show to realize there is more going on than just the music:
“We'd been talking about it for a while, but the summer seemed more opportune than ever to start tracking their first full-length. The idea was simple; record an honest album. No drum replacement. No vocal tuning. No "studio magic." Minimal microphone setups and sparse overdubbing would be used for a retro sound. Outcome: It doesn't sound pretty. It's not supposed to sound pretty. That's the studio magic. Halfway through the project I threw out the textbook. Everything sounded great, but I really wanted to push the guys out of their comfort zones. I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone, and we started thinking about how we could create an album that incorporated new sounds. Stuff people haven't heard before. Amplifiers recorded inside of aluminum trashcans. Screaming into megaphones. A drum kit made out of pots and pans. That's how we filled the dead space. Toy pianos were taking solos. Stompboxes and 50s AM radios that reeked of asbestos were being were outboard gear for mixing. When the computer crashed we would us an 80s 4-track Tascam tape machine that sounded absolutely horrendous. And all while, even though the experimenting has proved to be an equal part nightmare and reward, it's still PBL. It's still honest.”
