During the 2008 International DJ Expo in Atlantic City, an unknown Lady Gaga opened a talent showcase at the House of Blues at Showboat and our photographer Nick Valinote was there.

The International DJ Expo — an annual event bringing thousands of DJ industry folks together for a few days in Atlantic City — celebrates its 20th year this month.
From Aug. 16-19 the expo will celebrate its big 2-0 with an assortment of events mainly at the Trump Taj Mahal.
But along with an event at the Borgata, the expo will include its annual "Pioneer Party" at the House of Blues at Showboat on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
(This year's event is called the "PROMO ONLY/PIONEER PARTY," to be held at the House of Blues starting at 8:30pm. The event will feature Mike Posner, Kelly Rowland, Shaggy, Salt-N-Pepa, Judy Torres, Alexis Jordan, Auburn, Jessica Jarrell, Jump Smokers, Kaci Battaglia, Tiffany Dunn & Tino Coury. Plus, Showcase VJs: 2nd Nature, DVDJ Unique and Kris P. The event is free for all expo badgeholders.)
It may be something you don't want to miss as back in 2008 a pretty much unknown artist by the name of Lady Gaga opened the show.
On assignment at the event for Atlantic City Weekly, freelance photographer Nick Valinote was there and caught this wonderful early shot of one of the biggest names in music today.
"I remember thinking, I have no idea who this is, but I should take a shot," recalls Valinote. "She was unknown then, nobody really knew who she was."
Well, this year Atlantic City and the rest of the planet certainly knows who she is.
As do the concert-goers at this year's Lollapalooza festival, held in Chicago this past weekend.

As the photo above shows, some of this year's Lollapalooza attendees got an even closer look at the Gaga on Friday, Aug. 6.
During the Semi Precious Weapon’s performance at Lollapalooza on Friday, Lady Gaga jumped on stage during the band's song “Magnetic Baby” then joined front man Justin Tranter for some wild crowd surfing.
Lady Gaga was to appear at the Borgata earlier this year, but had to cancel. She made it up by playing a Borgata sponsored concert July 4 at Boardwalk Hall, which was the talk of the town. Lady Gaga will also appear in Atlantic City in February 2011 (and AC Weekly is giving away tickets!).
For those of you at this year's DJ Expo, pay attention to the unknowns. They may soon become tomorrow's superstars.
Weiss’ work has been the subject of books and photo galleries, and, owing to his friendship with Boogie Nights owner Dave Pena, some of his work from the 1970s and ’80s will be on display when Boogie Nights opens.
Both stories include a pair of huge pop stars collaborating — or at least talking about collaborating — at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.
For a while it appeared that Spears was about to tank since she seemed to make one poor choice after another. In 2007 she wrote on her Web site that she hit rock bottom and then she lost custody of her children.
“I’ve played quite a few times in [Las] Vegas, including on the Penn and Teller show and doing several private parties, and I’ve spent some time in what they call casino culture, but I’ve always longed to play Atlantic City."
Hours before the show, fans lined the Atlantic City Boardwalk donning bow-tie wigs, tutus, capes, nine-inch pumps and hair-curlers made from soda cans, creating an atmosphere of pomp and eccentricity, which is standard of any Gaga appearance.
Several specials related to Lady Gaga's Feb. 19 appearance are going on around town, including one at Trump Plaza (adjoining Boardwalk Hall), where their “Gaga for Gaga” signature drink specials include such concoctions as the “Little Monster’s Mix” (gin, Apple Pucker and pineapple juice), the “Paparazzi Potion” (Absolut vodka, Chambord, club soda and a lemon twist) and “A Shot of Bad Romance” (Cointreau, grape vodka and Sprite), “Telephone Treat.”
Throughout the expo, that vibe will be even stronger as parties and special events are scheduled with DJs such as DJ Skribble, DJ Shiftee and DJ Jazzy Jeff making appearances.
