A comedy series and another full summer slate of great music will be part of this year’s “Tony Mart’s Presents” events
Southern New Jersey resident Dena Blizzard, a former Miss New Jersey turned comedienne, will help kick-off the Comedy at the Point series May 30.
For about the last three years — beginning with a 25th anniversary show celebrating the storied Somers Point landmark called Tony Mart’s (1944-‘82) — the “Tony Mart’s Presents” series has been reviving the legacy of southern New Jersey rock ‘n’ roll with a diversity of excellent musicians.
That trend will continue, and this year Carmen Marotta of Tony Mart’s Presents will also co-produce with Bob Koob a comedy series at Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro.
“We are anticipating a great comedy series this summer with several celebrity comics,” Koob tells AC Weekly. “Our goal is to bring some great comedic entertainment to a small venue such as Sandi Pointe, keep the price down, and give the locals and tourists an awesome night out.”
Hilarious veteran comic Kevin Brennan, who has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, and Saturday Night Live, will host the Comedy at the Point series. The doors will open at 8:45pm and the shows will start 9:30pm, followed by a “DJ Request Hour” after the laughter ends. Tickets will be $20-$25.
The series kicks off Sunday, May 30, with lifelong southern New Jersey resident Dena Blizzard (a former Miss New Jersey), and JJ Ramirez of New York City. Blizzard recently debuted her one-woman show One Funny Mother: I’m Not Crazy earlier this month. The show took an introspective look into the daily life of the American mom, and was performed in conjunction with Mother’s Day at the Triad Theatre in New York City.
“If you’ve ever gone unshowered for days, stayed up all night with a sick kid, fought your husband over who works harder, or had a kid pee on you, then this show — and vodka — are for you,” says Blizzard, Miss New Jersey 1995, in a media release. “Comedy is truly my calling. I can’t cook, I hate laundry and if I look at one more dirty dish I’m going to scream. The good news is now that I have kids, I have built-in writers.”
Ramirez is one of New York City’s best headliners. Affectionately called “The Latin Lunatic,” Ramirez is a regular at such famed NYC clubs as World Famous Comic Strip Live!, the Improv, and Caroline’s on Broadway. He has appeared on comedy TV shows including An Evening at the Improv, Showtime at the Apollo, and Comic Strip Live. He is also featured in the comedy documentary film The Latin Legends of Comedy.
Other Comedy at the Point shows are scheduled for certain Saturday nights throughout the summer, including June 19, July 3, 17, 24 and 31, and Aug. 14 and 21. For more information and tickets, go to comedyatthepoint.com or tonymart.com. Tickets will also be available at the door or in advance at Sandi Pointe, 908 Shore Rd. in Somers Point.
The Tony Mart’s Presents series will also include plenty of sensational musical shindigs, and that’s no joke. The Tony Mart All-Star Jam is scheduled for Sunday, June 13, at Sandi Pointe. Hosted by the Danny Eyer Band, the jam will include Dr. Bobby Fingers, Bob Campanell, the Billy Walton Band, the Bubba Mac Blues Band, Ernie Trionfo, Jeff Schwachter and newcomer keyboard phenomenon Arthur Migliazza. Tickets for this jammin’ dance party will include a light snack and dessert buffet. Sandi Pointe will also have full menu and bar service available. A $15 donation will benefit Access One, a local 501(c)3 medical care and social services organization and support group for the chronically ill. Doors will open at 4pm and the show will start at 5pm in the classic tradition of Tony Mart’s Sunday Jam sessions.
Two other Tony Mart’s Presents events scheduled include the “After the Beach Rock ‘n’ Roll/Rhythm & Blues” party on July 2 (featuring New Orleans blues purveyor Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone), and the Billy Walton Band on July 23 (with cameo appearances by the Joe Krown Trio of New Orleans, including Krown on Hammond B-3 organ, Walter “Wolfman” Washington on guitar and vocals, and Russell Batiste on drums). More events will be announced as the details are finalized.
The success of this past October's Ocean City Fall Block Party, which drew an estimated 30,000 people to the family resort on Oct. 9, has switched on a lightbulb above the head of Ocean City's Herb "Bubba" Birch.
