The 6th annual ‘Celebration of the Suds’ features signature beer-infused pizzas among a host of attractions.
Let’s take this in simple steps. First step, pizza and beer go together. Got it.
Second step, the Atlantic City Convention Center is the site of the sixth annual Atlantic City Beer Festival, better known as “The Celebration of the Suds.” More than 75 different breweries will showcase their products.
But also among the exhibitors will be several food vendors including Tony Boloney’s, one of the city’s premiere pizza restaurants.
So beer vendors and pizza vendors also go together. Well, at festivals anyway. Got it.
So what then is the next step?
Well obviously, it’s Tony Boloney’s pizza infused with beer. And we’re not talking about the infusion that happens in your mouth when you bite a slice and swig your beer. We’re talking totally infused.
“Basically, we’re cooking the beer right into the pizza,” says Michael Hauke, owner of Tony Boloney’s. “I’m talking about the dough, the sauce, marinating the meat — everything. We’ve already tested these out and people say they taste like beer … and pizza … together. It’s pretty wild.”
Hauke will actually unveil three specialty-themed beer-infused pizzas after hooking up with the area breweries NJ Beer Company, Coney Island Craft Lagers and He’Brew.
Using each specialty beer as the main infusing agent, the menu reads like this:
• Hammered Hamburgler: Garden State Stout, Mexican Chipotle, Chili Mac and Cheese Pie
• Tipsy Yenta: He’Brew Ripa-on-Rye, Thousand Island Sauce with Pastrami, Sauerkraut and Caraway Seeds
• Sh#tfaced Chicken: Coney Island Lager Battered Bird, Honey Stout BBQ Sauce, Mozzarella and Cheddar
“You won’t believe our booth when you see it,” Hauke says. “We’re just going to have so much going on. It will blow people away.”
In its sixth year, the beer festival has grown exponentially and now hosts a series of “blow-people-away” attractions.
Last year, more than 17,000 turned out for the two-day festival making it one of the largest annual events in the resort.
This year’s festival includes showings by dozens of beer labels. It will be broken into three sessions, Friday, April 1, from 7-11:30pm, and Saturday, April 2, from noon-4:30pm and 6-10:30pm.
That’s a change from previous years when the festival ran Saturday to Sunday. To make up the gap, a special Sunday Brewery Brunch from W.L Goodfellows in Absecon will be held in two sessions, 10am-noon and 1-3pm. The brunch includes six half-pints of featured beers that complement the brunch menu. Visit brewersbrunch.com for details and menu.
Along with Tony Boloney’s, several area restaurants will be on hand offering everything from crab cakes to tacos.
Another major part of the show will be live entertainment, with each beer festival session opening up with pipes and drums from the Founders. Other featured bands include Life Speed, Go Go Gadget and Burnt Sienna.
While the first Slaughterfest (May 15, 2010) exceeded the organizers' hopes in terms of size, scope and funds raised for the charity, they believe the second annual event — slated for 11am-8pm Saturday, May 14 — can top 20,000 attendees. Especially with The Roots' ?uestlove opening the day.
Plus the 200 Club Brunch at Borgata Sunday, a new DrewToonz cartoon combining Don Rickles and the rodeo, and ?uestlove and May's Pizza Slaughter Fest.
"“Let’s face it, there are numerous beer festivals throughout the year and throughout the country — probably one going on every week somewhere and Anheuser-Busch has really thrown their support behind the one in Atlantic City. That’s the respect they have for a show like the one we have here."

Flash forward five years to October 2009. After a couple months of running the current location as a cafeteria-style operation, Hauke closed, rebranded and created the Tony Boloney’s concept.
As the unmistakable smell of thinly cut steak and fried onions wafted through the air in the posh setting of Caesars Palladium Ballroom Friday night for Guy Fieri’s Cheesesteak Battle, fans were stuffing their faces and stuffing the ballot boxes.
Inaugural Pizza Slaughter Fest Tony Boloney’s is an authentic Atlantic City pizzeria notorious for its superb pies and one-of-a-kind creations, and now it’s really thinking outside the pizza box with an inaugural event called Tony’s Pizza Slaughter Fest. Happening on Saturday, May 15, at the shop (300 Oriental Ave. in A.C.), festivities start at noon and will be highlighted by a contest in which intrepid souls will attempt to eat each of 30 signature slices from Tony’s pizza menu. Among the contestants is two-time defending Wing Bowl champ Jon “Super Squibb,” who is gunning for the first-place prize of the Golden Boloney Crown, Belt & Pizza Peel. “When the Squibb said he wanted to come and destroy the competition,” says Michael Hauke, Tony Boloney’s co-owner and head pizziolo, “I said, ‘Bring it on!’ because we have some major competitors that will go head-to-head with him as he tries to take down every slice of our pizza before anyone else.” Other contestants include Brad “The Lunatic” Sciullo, Dale “The Mouth of The South” Boone, Mike “The Polish...
