Fred & Ethel's

Lantern Light Tavern

Where: Rt. 9 & Moss Mill Rd. Towne of Historic Smithville, 652-0544

When: Bar opens 11:30am. Mon-Fri. happy hour 4-7pm with complimentary munchies and 75 cents off beer, wine and mixed drinks. Mondays are Mexican Monday with $2 Margaritas, $3 Coronas and a Mexican snack menu (try the cheesesteak chiquitas). Wed. night 25-cent wings. Thursday, two-for-one appetizers. Live music every Wed. Fri. and Sat.

Details: Fred & Ethel's, named after Fred and Ethel Noyes who founded the Historic Towne of Smithville, has become a hideaway treasure with good food, drink and live music. The bar's large outdoor patio, with beer-bucket specials, just adds to the coziness. "I think people come here partly because it is an older building in a historic setting and it's not just another cookie-cutter bar," says manager Tina Wolfschmidt.

Music: Fred and Ethel's is building a name for itself as the spot for acoustic performances, which fits the feel of the historic village. Wednesday's, for now, belong to Private Stock, which covers classic rock up to current pop. The Pickles are scheduled for Sept. 3. Other acts playing weekends include Paul Toz, Jesse & Sam, and the Back Bay Duo.

Manager Says: "I think we've created a very friendly, very relaxing little hideaway," Wolfschmidt says. "The shops in town close at 8pm, so after that it's just us. We have a very friendly staff and some very friendly people coming in. It's just a relaxing feel."
