The city will host air shows at the O.C. Airport and over the Boardwalk this weekend.Any town can put on an air show. You just need sky. But putting on two air shows in the same weekend, that’s impressive. Ocean City, however, is up to the task as it presents the 26th annual Ocean City Airport Festival on Saturday, Sept. 17, and then follows on Sunday, Sept. 18, with an Aerobatic Air Show off the Boardwalk. And both are free! The action starts with the Ocean City Airport Festival at the airport (where else?), 26th and Bay Avenue from 10am-3pm. The Airport’s grounds will be packed with various aircraft on display, with an awards ceremony at 2pm for the most outstanding aircraft. The highlight of the ground display will be a rare Mitchell World War II B-25 Bomber. The plane was made famous in April of 1942 when General Jimmy Doolittle led 15 B-25’s from the aircraft carrier Hornet in America’s first attack on mainland Japan. The B-25, from the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Reading, Pa., will take off from the O.C. Airport at the conclusion of the Festival at 3pm. Other events include a kite display by Air Circus of Ocean City from 11:30am-12:30pm on the Airport’s runway. At 12:30pm, the N.J.Pine Barrens RC Club will present a model airplane display. Some of the miniature jets will attain speeds of over 100 miles per hour while in flight. The air show also has a lot for kids including a paper airplane making and flying contest at 11am. There will be categories for children from 4 to 12. First place winners will receive a free ride on a real airplane, the Red Baron, which flies out of Ocean City. A paper clip sculpting contest will be held during the day, plus a yo-yo demonstration and Bubble display by Air Circus. There will also be free face painters. The youth band 1-2-3 Draw will entertain. There will also be a mini playground at the entrance to the airport and an antique auto display with a Runway Parade at 11:20am. Other highlights include free helicopter and airplane rides and refreshments will be available. Not enough? On Sunday, stunt pilots will perform a two-hour Aerobatic Air Show over the beach. The display will be visible the entire length of the City’s boardwalk from 1-3pm. The Aerobatic Show will feature 12 acts including individual performances and groups flying in formation. Featured performances include Aerobatics world champion, Rob Holland, Jane Wicker, a daredevil wing walker who has appeared in numerous movies and the Iron Eagle Aerobatic team. Parking tips, 2012 schedule, past years' highlights and more details for you to enjoy the 2012 Air Show.
Ocean City has been adroit at attracting tourists to the resort town in a number of quirky ways. This week it didn’t need to lift a finger to draw a large gathering, in a way it would probably prefer forgoing in the future.
In its ninth year, The Atlantic City Thunder Over the Boardwalk Air Show will fill the city’s skylines with jets, stunt planes and parachuters on Wednesday, Aug. 17, all capped off by a performance from the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds precision flying team, which has become the air show’s steady headliner each year.
All you need to know about this year's air show, including parking information, post-concert info and the schedule for the big Aug. 25 air show.
The inclusion of the Brazilian flight team will also garner international attention to the Atlantic City Air Show and dignitaries and embassy officials from Brazil are planning to attend this year's event in Atlantic City.
How did the Seventh Annual Atlantic City Air Show — “Thunder Over The Boardwalk” — go from an event that drew 150,000 people in 2003 to one that brought 750,000 people to the beach and Boardwalk to see the 2009 show? Each ensuing year brought more people and a better show. How did it happen? Those who have been responsible for the success of this event, which brought the greatest number of people to ever witness a show in Atlantic City’s history, thought outside the box. Those involved did not do the same thing each year. They realized that they had to have more attractions and provide for the welfare of those who came from far and near to see the magnificent performances of some of our military’s finest aircrafts, pilots and service personnel as well as highly reputed civilian aerobatic exhibitions. They didn’t just sit back and say, “Wow! We...
It was ninety-three years between Atlantic City's first full-fledged air show and its second show. It will only be one year between its second and third air shows. The first one was in 1910, the second in 2003 and the third is scheduled to be on August 18, 2004. The first air show, which was a phenomenon in those years, drew a crowd of slightly over 100,000 enthralled spectators. Last year's show drew over 200,000 thrilled spectators. This year it is anticipated that, with the success of last year's show and more time to advertise it, the viewer base will be close to 500,000. Once again, the show will be held mid-week - on a Wednesday. This allows for more aircraft to be on hand to demonstrate the capabilities of our nation's military air forces. Credit for bringing the show back to Atlantic City goes to the New Jersey Air National Guard and the Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce. They combined their efforts to make their hopes for a show, this year, become a reality. The mainstay of the show will once again be the US Air Force's world-renown Thunderbird team. Their original schedule for 2004 did not list Atlantic City....
