Most events held in Ocean
City during the summer come off seeming pretty normal. There’s sand sculpting contests, family nights on the Boardwalk and Nor’easters soccer games.

But every now and again there’s an event that reminds you this is Ocean City, where hermit crabs have names and there’s a whole spring parade honoring the Doo Dah, whatever that is.

In this case, it’s Friday’s (July 8, 7pm, at the Music Pier) Pickle Palooza. Or to be more exact, The Paisley Pickles, Rock the Pier Pickle Palooza.

But before you start thinking there’s some kind of pickle festival going to happen, the pickle paloosa is actually a performance by the children’s band, The Paisley Pickles.

The group promises a high-energy children’s concert that covers punk to jazz to rock n’ Roll. The group is to be featured on the upcoming PBS show I Play with My Food and is also known for song writing workshops.

So there will be no celebration of the gherkin, other than in song at this high-energy concert. Tickets are $7 and available at
thepaisleypickles.com.

Meanwhile the city is preparing for its annual Night in Venice celebration, which falls a little early this year on Saturday July 16.

There’s still time to register a boat or home for the annual festival, which this year has the optional theme Broadway on the Bay.

There will be cash prizes for all who enter boats plus trophies for boat winners and best decorated homes. Boat participants will receive $50 cash cards to enhance decorations providing they finish the Parade. Plus boat captains will be given a special gift and all boat owners will receive a free photo of their boat.

All boat and home entrants will be given a decorative mug featuring the Broadway theme.

Grand marshal of the parade will be Ian Laperriere, the Philadelphia Flyers’ popular forward.

To register for the Night in Venice boat or home competition, stop at City Hall Annex Mon.-Fri. from 9am-4:30pm or call 525-9300.You may also fax 399-0374. After hours or on weekends, call 364-4010 or e-mail msoifer@hotmail.com. Entry forms may also be downloaded from ocnj.us.
