Restaurant Week in O.C.

Last year, as the Ocean City Restaurant Association put together its first Restaurant Week, they set prix fixe prices for meals, just as Atlantic City traditionally does during its restaurant week. But what made sense for Atlantic City didn’t necessarily make sense for the more traditional shore atmosphere of O.C. “What we found was that with the wide diversity of restaurants and eateries that we have, we couldn’t find a price point that worked for everybody,” says Kevin Scull, vice-president of the association and owner of Scully’s Asbury Café. “We wanted all the various restaurants in town to be able to participate, so we came up with the idea of two for one deals. Everyone gets to put out a selected menu where you choose two entrees for one price.”

That change means every business, from pizza parlors and ice cream stands to full-scale restaurants, can find a special deal to offer guests as the city kicks off the official summer season. Ocean City restaurant week begins Sunday, Father’s Day, and runs through June 27.

To kick off the event, the association will hold a “Hungryman’s Relay Race” to benefit the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. The race will be held at 2pm from 5th to 9th streets on Asbury Ave. In the event, teams of runners will run between stops on the course, eating doughnuts and pizza slices at each stop. “We wanted to connect Restaurant Week with something good,” Scull says. “And right now the need of the community Food Bank is very high. Everything raised at the event will go to them. Plus during the week, we will have donation buckets for the Ocean City Community Food Cupboard.”

Preliminaries are scheduled for Thursday and Friday with the finals on Saturday, June 19. Tickets are available by calling Mary Lou Cake at 856-424-3564.
