Ocean City says goodbye to summer with another ‘Whacky, but not tacky’ celebration — the King and Queen of Plop contest.
As the city and the region slip into that last carefree bastion of summer fun, namely the Labor Day weekend, there’s an anxious feeling that takes hold — A feeling that somebody somewhere should mark the passing of summer 2011 with an act of complete silliness and frivolity.
It’s all going to get so serious soon enough. We need people willing to make complete fools of themselves in the name of fun.
Thankfully, Ocean City always has another goofball event up its sleeve. So on Friday, Sept. 2, you can honor the passing of yet another season — hurricane shortened by one weekend — with the city’s King and Queen of Plop contest.
What? To plop, as in to fall dramatically, and hopefully with some comic flair, into the sand.
Otherwise known as the Fall Guy and Girl contest, it gives contestants their opportunity to fall theatrically, and hopefully in slow motion, all to grab the coveted king and queen titles.
Another of the city’s “Whacky, but not tacky events”, it also includes performances by the city’s usual “whacky” suspects including Suzanne Muldowney, also know as Underdog, the Ocean City Wind Chimes band (What? They play wind chimes), soprano Nancy Fox, pirates from Air Circus and a special “plop” performance by gymnast Julia Albertson.
Entry is free and prizes will be awarded. All participants receive a Plopping Certificate. The contest starts at 9am on the 9th St. Beach.
Thanks to Hurricane Irene, you can also still catch the Ocean City Theater Company’s junior production of Godspell we highlighted last week. The performance has been moved to Friday Sept. 2 and the Ocean City Tabernacle. Unfortunately, Irene left room for only one performance of the play at 7pm. All tickets for previously scheduled performances will be honored.
And while Labor Day may mark the end of much of the season’s events, The Ocean City Pops maintain a full schedule of performances through September.
You can catch the Ocean City Theatre’s fully staged production of CATS with the Ocean City Pops at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace Sept. 4,6, and 7.
Artistic Director Michael Hartman has recruited professional singers, dancers and actors from New York plus choreographer Kelly Swartz and Musical Director Sarah Brett England to present an entertaining production of this musical masterpiece.
Shows start at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20/15. Call the Music Pier Box Office at 525-9248.
