Southside Johnny

“They can expect to have a good time.” So says John Lyon, more memorably known as Southside Johnny, on what audiences can expect at his Saturday (May 28) concert at The Music Pier, one of the events ushering in another summer in Ocean City.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Jersey shore legends (though with a northern Jersey shore twist) may be the headliners this weekend, but you can also expect a strong showing from area pooches, soggy businessmen and the Nor’easters soccer club as the city celebrates Memorial Day.

Southside Johnny purposely left his summer open between European tours to play the New Jersey area. He brings his ever-evolving band to town, now sporting local fave guitarist Billy Walton, who joins an illustrious lineup that has seen more than 100 people claim to be an Asbury Juke (at least for a night) through the years.

Sunday brings Barks on the Boards, a fundraiser for the Ocean City Humane Society that allows pet owners to strut their proud pooches down the city Boardwalk, an area usually off limits to dogs. More than 500 dogs are expected to strut their stuff.

But it all starts Friday with the Unlocking of the Ocean and the annual Businessmen’s Plunge. Mayor Jay Gillian will officially unlock the ocean with large wooden key (what else?) with the help of Martin Z. Mollusk, who always seems to be around at these sort of things. Then to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance,” about 100 “business people,” most in suits and ties, will march into the ocean. Is there any other way to start the summer in Ocean City?

Our interview with Southside Johnny is online. And just for fun  click here for a video.
