Some past action at the annual Guns Vs. Hoses charity boxing event at Gardner's Basin. The third annual event is Saturday, June 19.

Shannon Stinsman is a lifelong boxing fan and professional firefighter/EMT. About three-and-a-half years ago he came up with the idea to combine his partiality for pugilism and life-saving livelihood into an annual charity function.

The third annual Guns Vs. Hoses “Battle at the Basin” boxing event will again take place at Historic Gardner’s Basin on Saturday, June 19, starting at noon.

The event pairs primarily members of local fire departments against those of local police departments, and also members of area boxing clubs against one another.

Through corporate sponsorship and a $20 donation requested of spectators, all proceeds from the event will be donated toward Ricky’s Rainbow Fund (named after the six-year-old son of a Pleasantville firefighter who is battling cancer, and has exceeded his insurance cap), Gilda’s Club of Southern New Jersey, and A.C. Police Athletic League (PAL) children’s programs.

“We expect to raise more money for our charities and make this tournament an event that will be one of the most exiting festivals of the year for all involved,” Stinsman said in a media release.

“The past two years we raised approximately $20,000 for our charities and all attendees had an awesome time, based on their feedback. This year we expect an even better turnout."

“I’m a huge boxing fan, and I wanted to start a boxing club for firefighters basically just to get a good cardio in and maybe a little sparring in just to stay in shape,” Stinsman, a captain in the Atlantic City Fire Department, told AC Weekly prior to last year’s event.

“Well, it kind of evolved, and after a while I thought ‘why not have a guns versus hoses [police versus fire] tournament?’ The real boxers at the PAL gave us some pointers, we threw the idea out the to the cops, and they got more guys to be involved. It’s really taken off.”

Judging of each bout is based on AAU Golden Gloves scoring in which ringside judges tally the number of clean punches landed. Match-ups are based on weight classes and, in cases of members of opposing boxing clubs, experience levels.

If it rains, the competition will likely be relocated to the National Guard Armory in A.C.
