Here we thought the big sports news out of Washington, D.C. today was going to be the beginning of the Roy Halladay era as the Phillies open the season against the Washington Nationals, with President Obama throwing out the first pitch this afternoon.
Last night we found out the biggest news about Philadelphia and Washington today is that the Redskins gave up their second round pick (No. 37) this year, and a conditional draft pick — either third or fourth round next year — to make Donovan McNabb their starting quarterback.
We knew a trade was coming, but even veteran Eagles watchers had to be stunned that Andy Reid and the Birds made the trade in the division. McNabb will have a chance to burn the Eagles twice this coming season.
During the press conference about the trade, coach Reid was asked if the release of Brian Westbrook and other veterans, the trade of Sheldon Brown and the McNabb move meant the Eagles were in a rebuilding mode. Once again he would not take the bait, thanking McNabb for his 11 years of service and saying the team was merely getting younger.
Eagles fans know better. The move had to be made, but with a well regarded, but unproven quarterback under center in Kevin Kolb, and with numerous issues about the defense and questions about the offensive line, the Eagles will be rebuilding. Does that mean they will miss the playoffs? Not necessarily, but expectations for this season have to be tempered with common sense by Eagles Nation.
Be careful what you wish for Eagles faithful. When Kolb hits a tough patch while the Redskins are rallying behind McNabb, it might sink in what he meant to this franchise.
Call me crazy, but I expect them to make to the NFC Championship game, win it over the Packers, and lose to the AFC champions, Pittsburgh. I did go there, a Keystone State Super Bowl.
Let’s face it Eagles fans. When it came down to a choice of Tampa Bay, the Giants or Green Bay, you were praying it was not going to be the Packers with their great pass rush, led by likely Defensive Player of the Year Clay Matthews and wily veteran Charles Woodson, coupled with the offensive skills of top quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
