Atlantic City has been the site of the World Pong Tour’s biggest event the last three summers, and now A.C.’s Golden Nugget will be the site of the WPT’s second largest annual event.
ATLANTIC CITY — The gaming capital of the East Coast and the “city that’s always turned on” are certainly two of the monikers Atlantic City is best known for. Now it can probably add “nation’s beer pong headquarters” to its list of distinctions, as a second major event on the World Pong Tour (WPT) will be held in A.C. this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19-20.
Actually, the competition that grew out of a weekly beer-pong league at a small New York college no longer uses beer in cups (or even ping-pong paddles … or even a regulation-sized ping-pong table), since games are open to those under age 21 (the minimum age is 18 to compete). But it has evolved into a nationwide craze and 35-city tour that last June culminated in a $50,000 World Pong Tour Championship in Atlantic City — held at Resorts casino for the second straight year and in A.C. for the last three years.
On Sunday the WPT will debut its second major tournament — at the Golden Nugget in A.C. — dubbed the U.S. Pong Open. Participants can either buy their way into the tournament or will be competing through having qualified at a preliminary event elsewhere certified by the WPT. The U.S. Pong Open will have a $10,000 Prize Pool, including $5,000 for first place.
The main event is scheduled to start 1pm Saturday, Nov. 19. Each team will play 10 games in the preliminary rounds with the top teams advancing to the final round on Sunday, Nov. 20. Teams are required to pick up their schedule on Nov. 18 or 19, before the tournament.

The World Beer Pong Tour — which evolved from a weekly league at a small New York college to a nationwide craze — recently announced that the $50,000 grand finale of its 35-city tour will be held Sunday through Tuesday, June 13-15, at Resorts Atlantic City. Additionally, Bally’s Wild Wild West Casino has created a gaming area in its new entertainment venue that will include 12 beer-pong tables. Through a partnership with Bpong.com, founders of the World Series of Beer Pong and a leading retailer of beer-pong gear, enthusiasts will be able to partake in beer-pong 24 hours per day at Bally’s, if they’re so inclined.
