With summer in full-swing and the 4th of July holiday fast approaching, it’s officially white jeans season. While we don’t intend to throw away our heavy, dark jeans anytime soon, ‘tis the season for white and light-hued denim.
Denim, and white jeans in particular, are a classic wardrobe staple for summer at the shore. Today’s styles offer versatility in a way many pieces don’t, as they can be dressed-up with stilettos and a great clutch for a sleek date-night ensemble, styled with a structured blazer and pointed-nude pumps for a more casual office look at work and also dressed-down in their distressed state.
Sources like the fashion go-to site Who, What, Wear report retail analytics that reveal the rainbow-hued jeans from seasons past — including bright reds and pinks — are on the way out, and in place of the colored-denim styles, we are seeing top designers and fashion houses moving away from last-season’s style, the ultra-skinny jeans, in favor of a more relaxed fit. Consumers are gravitating toward the once-snubbed high-waisted “mom jeans” and the popular “boyfriend jeans,” a relaxed style with a more comfortable fit.
Simply put, white jeans are so easily styled and the more wear they receive, the more comfortable they get. But, the secret to well-styled white jeans starts with a great pair of denim and a fabulous fit. Investing in at least one timeless style is key and I personally find that it helps to envision several different ways to wear the style in versatile ways.
If you are unsure where to start, a pair such as Gretchen Scott jeans, available at People People in Stone Harbor (9810 Third Ave., $108, Facebook.com) look sleek, chic and oh-so-shore on just about every shape, offering an ultra-flattering cotton fabric with built-in spandex. Express also offers a classic white skinny jean, priced at $79.90, that offers a polished look, tailored with a flattering rise and a slimming silhouette (Hamilton Mall, 4403 E. Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing, ShopHamilton.com).
Using a classic staple, here are a few versatile, fresh looks you can rock all summer long, incorporating some of the year’s hottest trends.
Beach chic, monochromatic & neutral
Keeping your look monochromatic and neutral is always in style and is the ultimate sophisticated beach-chic style. The key here is to pair white denim with different shades of white, beige, nudes and other neutral tones to add dimension to your outfit. Avoid same-tone whites, as you’ll look more Casper The Friendly Ghost and less Hamptons-bound for the week.

The Britt Ryan silk tunic is the perfect neutral to pair with white denim ($242), with additional accessories such as a great set of tassle-earrings ($24) and some fun sunnies like the fabulous polarized DIFF Eyewear shades, a celebrity favorite among songstress Jessie James Decker, who also designs a line for the brand. What we love about these sunglasses is the price, $85, a fraction of the cost of some of the iconic, high-end brands, and the company donates a pair of reading glasses for every pair sold to those without access to vision care around the globe.
Pop of color
Wearing your whites with solid bold and bright colors is a way to instantly add vibrancy to your look. When paired with stark white jeans. The colorful contrast adds eye-catching appeal to your outfit. Pairing white denim with a bright, colorful top is fun, flirty and oh-so-feminine. The hot pink Coastview blouse from Tommy Bahama ($88), is lightweight and offers a beautiful pom-pom detail. If you opt to trade-in your heels for the night, adorable Tommy Bahama flip-flops, which come in a myriad of colors, including a chic black and white print, are a steal at $28. There is something oh-so-chic about the simplicity of a great pair of white jeans and a black blouse, especially one that boasts cold-shoulders and a bit of flounce. It evokes the style and sophistication of one of my favorite cities, Paris. A black and white pairing is timeless, classic and always in style — and is sure to give your outfit a certain je ne sais quoi that others will be sure to notice. To add a bit more summer flare into your black and white style, incorporate some woven pieces like a hat or tan sandals. The texture breaks up the monotone grayscale tones and pulls everything together. A straw boater hat with black pom pom detail, also from Forever 21 at The Walk, is charming and affordable, priced at $17.90. Woven wedge sandals from Tommy Bahama, are $48.
Stars and stripes
And last, but not least, the iconic way to style a great pair of white denim during summer is pairing it with some good old red and blue. Stripes boasting navy, red and yellow tones are a timeless way to add chic into your step. While stripes are on-trend this season, the classic style is simply always en vogue and Shore chic. With the 4th of July upon us, and summer picnics, barbecues and fireworks parties in sight, you simply cannot go wrong opting for seaside nautical flare — whether dressed up or more casual.
