New Jersey has taken another step to allow sports betting at Atlantic City casinos, but there is still a  pretty big step in the way - overturning a fedral ban.

Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill Tuesday allowing for sports betting at casinos and the state’s four horse tracks. The bill had overwhelmingly passed the state Senate and Assembly.

Now comes the big step, overturning a federal ban on sports betting.

The state is bracing for a court battle to overturn a federal law that makes it illegal to bet on sports in all but four states. Nevada, however, is the only state that has true sports betting.

Should the state win, sports betting would be allowed in all states.

"This is the beginning of the end for the unfair, discriminatory and unwise federal ban on sports betting," State  Sen. Raymond Lesniak, an Elizabeth Democrat, told The Associated Press. Lesniak has been the bill's biggest supporter.

“NJ's congress years ago should've gotten this law passed years ago so that the need for the law to be overturned would be null and void.”
