Coldplay coming to Atlantic City?

When Revel Entertainment opens Atlantic City’s first new casino resort in nine years on April 2, CEO Kevin DeSanctis will be borrowing an entertainment page right out of his old Mohegan Sun playbook.

Revel’s guests can expect to find free entertainment in a venue known as The Social, an open, 700-capacity room smack in the center of the gaming floor.

The room will mirror the Wolf Den, a 400-seat showroom in the middle of the casino action at the gaming hall DeSanctis opened in 1996 for Sun International, which operates the Native American property for the Mohegan Indian tribe.

“I think we’ll program [The Social] the way Mohegan’s Wolf Den was originally envisioned,” DeSanctis told reporters last week during a conference call to discuss Revel’s debut in six weeks.

“I always liked the concept of not charging in that environment, other than you probably have to buy a couple drinks,” he added.

There will occasionally be “name” artists performing in The Social, he said. Although they won’t be A-list entertainers, DeSanctis stopped short of labeling them B-list.

“I think we’ll have some surprises in there,” he said. “Yes, it will be a lot of musical groups. But there’ll be some other things there. ... I also think on weekends, when there’s an awful lot of people in town, we want to create some surprises there. But I wouldn’t want to be confined to the B-level entertainer thought process.”

A check of the latest Wolf Den lineup at Mohegan Sun shows a broad range of acts that skew across a variety of age demographics and performance genres.

Artists scheduled there over the next few months include former Righteous Brother Bill Medley, the Irish rock band The Saw Doctors, House of Pain front man Everlast, country singer Phil Vassar and blues singer Shemekia Copeland.

Over the years, Wolf Den crowds have also seen free shows by artists including America, Eddie Money, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer, all of whom have played Atlantic City on a regular basis and commanded ticket prices ranging from $25 to $50 or more.

The Social will be one of Revel’s three major entertainment venues.
