The 2012 Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival began with an opening night party Thursday, July 26, at the Pool at Harrah’s Resort that featured a high-end food court and superstar chefs Anne Burrell and Andrew Zimmern mingling with the crowd.

Surrounding the pool was a series of food stations representing some of the events that will be taking place the rest of the weekend. The chefs from Sammy D’s restaurant at Harrah’s, including the man himself, Chef Sammy DeMarco, were serving up mini-cheesesteaks as well as DeMarco’s own creation, delicious cheesesteak egg rolls to preview the “Define Cheese-Steak” event that takes place tonight, Friday, July 27, outdoors at Showboat.

To represent the “Blues, Brew and BBQ” event Saturday, noon-3pm outside Showboat, chefs from Dos Caminos at Harrah’s served up fire roasted maize (corn) with lime butter that was delicious despite being a bit on the cold side, Conchinita tacos, warm corn tortillas pickled onions and Serrano salsa, and a Michelada beer cocktail with clam, tomato juice and lime.

Harry’s Oyster Bar at Bally’s (which is having a Crab Fest Saturday, July 28, 3-6pm) featured a station with freshly shucked oysters that were heavenly, and the Steakhouse at Harrah’s served up Dirty Grilled Flank Streak Bruschette with fresh Jersey tomato, Coach Farms cheese spread and micro basil. The freshness of the tomato made this Jersey girl sigh.

To pay homage to the “Sweet and Stylish” event, there was a dessert station that featured coconut lime lollipops (a chocolate covered macaroon on a stick) and a creamy triple chocolate mousse confection among others that were rapidly devoured.

Upstairs in the Loft at the Pool there was wine by the glass, and throughout the evening servers were bringing around other light bites and beverages (sushi, corn beef sliders and mini cocktails, with rum and vodka being the prime ingredients).

Atlantic City’s foodie-mania weekend got off to a delicious start with so much more to come.
