A few weeks ago, Showboat added an elegant dining option to its property with the opening of Oshi Sushi & Sake. This week it was a classic burgers and fries joint as Johnny Rockets had its official ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Lorenzo Langford and JR franchise owner Bill White manning the scissors.

The new Johnny Rockets has been up and running for two weeks serving up tasty burgers, hot dogs and other classic sandwiches and milkshakes.

Franchise owner White, who owns a string of 10 Johnny Rockets in New Jersey, including a shop down the Boardwalk at Bally’s, explains that Harrah’s Entertainment came to him with the idea of opening a second A.C. location. Says White, “I was happy to oblige with a new location. Johnny Rockets customers were telling Harrah’s people they didn’t like the long walk to get to Johnny Rockets [from the north end of the Boardwalk]. Now we have two locations.”

Gov. Christie would approve. This is certainly a family-friendly restaurant, judging by the amount of kids enjoying the food and the dancing waiters. The latter is a Johnny Rockets tradition. If you want a show, just put a nickel in the tableside juke box and punch in “Stayin’ Alive.”

Mayor Langford confessed he’s been a long time Johnny Rockets’ fan, praising both their cherry Cokes and their commitment to invest in Atlantic City.

This was my first time at Johnny Rockets and while the burgers did look inviting, I opted for the chicken club sandwich with smoked applewood bacon, thinly sliced grilled chicken and sourdough bread. It was delicious, especially washed down with a chocolate shake and sourdough batter-dipped onion rings on the side.

Johnny Rockets, with its malt shop ambience, harks back to an era in the 1950s when the Atlantic City Boardwalk was alive with similar family food emporiums like Mammy’s and Hi-Hat Joes.
