This is a particularly good year to attend Tropicana Atlantic City’s Taste of the Quarter, taking place Monday, Aug. 21.

Why? Because, while the formula has remained the same for this annual event — restaurants, bars and eateries throughout Trop will offer bites of their best meals, showing off what makes them special — this year has seen the opening of two distinctively great restaurants, Jose Garces’ Olon and Okatshe, both of which will participate in Taste of the Quarter.

“We’re going to have our table set up right by our restaurants to introduce people to the new spaces, especially if they haven’t been back since it was Fin,” says Olon and Okatshe Chef Maria Schmidt. “Jose will be there, too.”

That’s right — the Iron Chef at the helm of the two new Tropicana concepts will be on hand to show off the choice dishes being prepared by the chefs at Olon and Okatshe. The former, an Ecuadorian concept, will offer shrimp ceviche, made with Mexican blue shrimp, jalapeño, tomato, lime vinaigrette, avocado, and cilantro. The latter, a Japanese-inspired joint, will showcase its Tsukemono, made of assorted Japanese pickles.

“Since part of our branding is coastal seafood, it’s important to showcase seafood,” says Schmidt of the “tastes” Olon and Okatshe will offer. “It’s something people are familiar with, but it’s fun to educate people and show them how it’s made, and that all of the sauces and ingredients are coming from fresh produce and vegetables.”

The two Garceswill join over 25 other restaurants from around Trop that are also participating in the event.

“Honestly, I’m not from the area, so for me it’s a cool way to see all the things that are in the Quarter at Tropicana,” says Schmidt. “There’s a lot for people to do and see. It’s a cool way to experience a little bit of everything.”
