The island of Brigantine suffered a hard hit from Hurricane Sandy, seeing the early effects of the powerful storm Sunday afternoon, Oct. 28, before bearing its full brunt Monday evening, Oct. 29. Strong winds and heavy rain, combined with a full moon, swelled tides to record levels on the barrier island and joined the bay and ocean in many areas. President Obama and N.J. Gov. Chris Christie visited Brigantine following a stop in Atlantic City on Tuesday, Oct. 30, to offer words of consolation to those who took shelter in the Brigantine Community Center, many of whom lost everything they had in the storm. Later the President's motorcade stopped at North Point Marina, where the storm's full impact was evidenced by overturned boats and massive property damage. The President urged all to stay strong through the stress and strife.
