Ten movies that should continue the movie momentum

It was a great summer at the movies. I haven't said that in nearly a decade. That means the pressure is on for the fall and winter movies to try and extend the momentum generated by such brilliant films as The Dark Knight, Hancock and Tropic Thunder.
Beyond the movies mentioned in my Toronto Film Festival preview last issue, here are 10 movies due out in the next few months that are have me thinking that fall/winter 2008 just might match the quality of the sizzling summer season.
A remake of the classic bitch-slapping classic from 1939, this ultimate chick flick stars Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Eva Mendes. Sex In The City and Mamma Mia! proved that women had box office power in the right vehicle. Sept. 12
Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are together again in this cop drama about thirty-year partners nearing retirement who are investigating one last murder together. Co-stars 50 Cent as the pimp/murder victim. Sept. 12
Here is another Hollywood insider satire, not quite as dark as Tropic Thunder, starring a busy Robert De Niro, Bruce Willis playing himself, Catherine Keener and Robin Wright Penn, directed by Barry Levinson. Oct. 3
Ridley Scott follows up American Gangster with this thriller about shady CIA dealings and the war on terror, starring Russell Crowe and Leonardo DeCaprio. Enough said. Oct. 10
W. If you think Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been raking George W. Bush over the coals, imagine Oliver Stone letting loose on W. in this political drama/satire from the man who gave us JFK and Nixon. Josh Brolin has the title role, with Ellen Burstyn, James Cromwell and Elizabeth Banks. Oct. 17
Quantum of Solace
James Bond is back and so is Daniel Craig in the title role. This is a sequel to Casino Royale, set just an hour after the last movie ended. Craig helped re-boot the franchise, so I'm expecting more of the same excellence, especially with a screenplay by Oscar winner Paul Haggis. Nov. 7
