In what ABC News deemed as a "largely predictable set of nominations announced in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Tuesday [Dec. 14]," the picks for this year's Golden Globe Awards categories were chosen this morning.

The "Glee" heavy list also included three nominations for HBO's Boardwalk Empire — in the Best TV Drama, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories.

Actor Steve Buscemi, who portrays the fictional character Nucky Thompson (based on the real Nucky Johnson) on the show, was nominated for best actor.

Kelly MacDonald, who plays Margaret Schroeder in Boardwalk Empire, was nominated for best supporting actress. It was announced earlier this year that HBO will air will a second season of the hit show. (Which is also a hit for Atlantic City.)

Cable TV shows snagged more nominations this year than network TV shows did, with cable shows getting 35 of the 54 nominations available.

HBO led the pack with 12 total nominations.

Showtime had 8 nominations for thier cable TV shows, such as Dexter.

In real life, Nucky Johnson, Atlantic City’s Boardwalk emperor during the 1920s, did eventually marry a former showgirl and actress, a local woman named Flossie Osbeck. But that didn’t happen until one day before Johnson began serving a four-year prison term for tax fraud in 1941. There’s little historical evidence to support the fact that Lucy is patterned after Osbeck.
